Six Walled Lake Students Win Awards in Mathematics Pentathlon

In their first year, Mary Helen Guest Elementary students bring home awards from the spring tournament.

Students from six Walled Lake Elementary Schools recently participated in National Mathematics Pentathlon Tournaments in April and May.

In the Division I event, Danny Sheehan, Mary Helen Guest Elementary first grader, received a Hall of Fame award for winning all five games. Sheehan, Parker Stasak and Lucas Price earned gold medals. Lucas Emeott, Regina Ortiz and Cedric Shouse earned silver medals. All are Guest students.

Principal Michelle Fiebke-Lang said this was the first year for the school's Math Pentathlon Club, open to students in grades K-5.

"They did an outstanding job this school year," she said. "We had over 29 students participate in the club and many who went to the tournament returning with medals and honorable mentions. We are so proud of our new Pentathletes and look forward to more students joining our math club next school year.”

In the Division II event, Aditya Senthil, Hickory Woods Elementary second grader, won all five of his matches, earning him a gold medal.
