Walled Lake School Board Seeking New Member

If you're a district resident and want to make a big difference in local schools, your application is due by Jan. 21.

Walled Lake Consolidated School Board member Mike Smith resigned this month due to family and work reasons, according to school officials. , had been elected in 2010 to serve a six-year term.

"I am proud to have served the parents, students, administration, teachers and the community of the district by being a voice; not only as an elected school board member, but also as a graduate of the school district," Smith said in a statement released Friday. "The Walled Lake School District has helped to make me who I am today."

In accord with district policies, the board must appoint a new member in 30 days.

  • Interested individuals must be a district resident and be 18-years or older.
  • The term of the appointment is until Dec. 31, 2014. 
  • Applications are due Jan. 21 by 4 p.m.
  • Candidate interviews will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31 beginning at 6 p.m.

The application is available on wlcsd.org.

Officially, the Board of Education is responsible for adopting a balanced budget annually, hiring and evaluating the Superintendent and more. They serve for a six-year term attending monthly meetings and many District events.

"(Board members) give tirelessly of their time and energy to Walled Lake Consolidated School District," said Superintendent Kenneth Gutman. "Mostly, they care about our students, staff, community and everyone we serve."
