Walled Lake Schools Bond Work Starts in 'Clusters' This Summer

Superintendent Kenneth Gutman said working in groups of schools will minimize down time for each building.

The Walled Lake Schools Board of Education learned more Thursday about how the Safety, Security and Technology Bond program, approved by voters in November, will be implemented.

Work will be done in clusters of schools, with the majority of the work in those buildings completed at one time.

“We favor this method instead of opting to try to do 'something' in each school," superintendent Kenneth Gutman said. "This way, a school will ideally experience 'down time' one time, instead of disruption multiple times over several different years.”

The first cluster of schools to receive upgrades are Hickory Woods, Meadowbrook, Pleasant Lake, Keith, Oakley Park and Loon Lake.

The schools were selected because creating secure and controlled visitor entrances will be relatively easy to complete, as they will require less design time, demolition or construction work.

In addition to the security entrances, these schools will receive the entire complement of safety, security and technology work, which will render them unusable for any summer activities.

While some infrastructure work will be done at all schools beginning next summer, the substantive work at the remaining schools will take place in subsequent summers.

A schedule for the remaining schools will be developed and shared after the plans and specifications for next summer’s schools are complete next spring.

“We remain appreciative of the community’s support of this Safety, Security and Technology Bond and we will keep the community apprised as the work and plans progress," Gutman said.
