West Bloomfield MME/ACT Results Drop from 2012

The district shows long-term progress across the board in all of the ACT subject areas.

Echoing state-wide performance, West Bloomfield Schools has made progress over time, but fewer students met benchmarks this year on the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and ACT college entrance exams.

State-wide results for the standardized tests released Monday by the Michigan Department of Education show a four-year upward trend in both assessments. However, MME student proficiency scores declined slightly from last year to this year. High school juniors take the tests in the spring.

Student performance falls into one of four categories: advanced, proficient, partially proficient and not proficient. Students must score either "proficient" or "advanced" to be considered proficient in that subject.

The bright spot this year for West Bloomfield juniors is the ACT English exam, with 70.7 percent meeting the college-ready benchmark. That's an improvement of more than three points over last year and 5.5 points over 2010. The district has made progress over 2010 results in all subject areas.

MME results showed a more than 5-point drop in the percentage of students judged proficient in math and less than 2-point increase in writing, the only area where students did better year-over-year. West Bloomfield's results have improved over 2010 results in every area except reading.

The state is in its second year of more rigorous standards, with scores of around 65 percent required to meet proficiency, up from 39 percent.

Correction: In the ACT composite score chart, the West Bloomfield number was initially incorrect. In addition ACT scores originally listed at the bottom of this post were incorrect and have been removed.
