West Bloomfield Students Improve ACT, MME Scores

The Michigan Department of Education released Michigan Merit  Exam (MME) and ACT scores Tuesday. The Michigan Merit Exam is what 11th graders take in lieu of the MEAP.

In , the average ACT score improved by more than half of a point, from 21 last year to 21.6 this year. Reading and social studies scores fell, while math, writing, and science scores improved.

"We are very proud of the progress our students have shown, particularly in mathematics. Through looking at data and providing effective interventions with struggling students, our teachers have risen to the challenge of increasing student achievement. Although our scores in reading are not yet where we would like them to be, we have a solid plan in place to address this issue in the coming school year," said WBHS principal Tom Shelton in a statement.

Statewide, the average composite ACT score improved from last year, from nearly 19.3 (out of a possible 36) in 2010 to 19.33 for 2011.

However, the statewide average MME score fell in reading and social studies from last year. The statewide average MME score improved in math, writing, and science.

“Students are being challenged with greater rigor and are achieving at higher levels,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan in a statement. “Michigan educators are to be commended for the efforts they put in to help more students learn and succeed.”
