Role Players Step Up in Lakers' Girls Tourney Win

The West Bloomfield High School girls varsity basketball team beat Rochester by 17 to win the Rochester Holiday Classic for the second straight season.

girls basketball head coach Steve Larkin knows that star guard Sydni Davis can't beat other teams with her statistics alone. The Lakers varsity girls basketball team's 44-27 victory over Rochester Friday in the Rochester Holiday Classic was a testament to role players stepping up in the box score, according to a report in MI Prep Zone.

Davis led the Lakers with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and six steals, but stepping up as well were Ashley Zeigler with 10 points and Jenny Cabaravdic, who added eight points and led the team with nine rebounds. Kheri Motley and Melissa Christenson combined for 16 rebounds for the Lakers (4-2).

Prior to the season, . “We have pretty good scorers coming back,” Larkin said in early December. “And all our five starters this year have varsity starting experience.”

Larkin conceded it might the smallest team he’s coached at West Bloomfield in his five seasons, but it makes up for the lack of size with tremendous team chemistry and athleticism.

“This is by far the most cohesive team I’ve had,” Larkin said. “We are real guard heavy. If we are going to win, we’ve got to spread the floor and run and gun. We can’t get in too many half-court sets, we aren’t big enough.”

The Lakers return to the court Thursday to play Stoney Creek on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
