UPDATE: Lakers Lacrosse Tops Walled Lake Western

Lacrosse, baseball, soccer and tennis share the spotlight at West Bloomfield High School as spring sports begin for many teams this week.

The week ahead promises exciting action as several teams in West Bloomfield Township are either starting their spring sports season or working out the kinks in anticipation of more games yet to come. Monday

The team rolled out to a 11-3 lead in the first half at home against Walled Lake Western en route to a 14-7 rout. It was easily the best half of  lacrosse we played all season — passing the ball around, hitting the open players, making the easy plays and assisting on six of the first half's 11 goals," said Head Coach Ed Anderson, whose team improved to 2-1 on the season. Senior attacker Nathan Rabens led the team with six goals.

Wednesday

The Lakers varsity baseball team will hit the road in an early-season test against rival North Farmington. Last season, West Bloomfield lost the only game it played against the Raiders, at home April 5, by a score of 7-2. This season, the Lakers want revenge.

“Having coach Pierce being a North Farmington alumni, I kinda want to show it to him,” said Steele. “The team I really want to beat is North Farmington, having a couple of tough losses through the years.”

The varsity game begins at 4 p.m., while the junior varsity team will travel to North Farmington for a 4 p.m. start there.

After being rained out of their opener last week against Allen Park, will attempt to start the season on the right foot against Troy Athens.

The Lakers hope to capitalize on last season's effort, which ended in defeat at the state finals tournament in June at Midland Community Tennis Center with a 17th-place finish and saw senior captain Morgan Taylor fall in the No. 2 singles finals to Andrea Calhoun of Midland Dow High School.

Thursday

The Lakers varsity girls soccer team hopes to start the season off the right foot after its scheduled season opener against Waterford Mott was snowed out last week. The Lakers will instead travel to Birmingham Seaholm for a game beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“Our goals are winning the league, playing well in our off-conference games and then going into the playoffs on a high note,” Head Coach Jason Clark said after practice last week. “This year, most of our stars will be our seniors that have been on the team for the past four years.” The junior varsity game at Seaholm is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
