30 Days of Giving, Day 25: Honor Flight Michigan Legacy

Veterans' group seeks support to build a World War II monument in Royal Oak.

This is part of a 30-day series of ways Patch community members can give back this holiday season. We hope you'll take part in this 30 Days of Giving and take the spirit beyond the holidays, because there truly is need all year long.

Give back to those who served our country

The Honor Flight Michigan Legacy Inc. is a nonprofit group based out of Royal Oak that raises funds to fly World War II veterans to Washington, DC, to see the World War II memorial. From 2007-10, the organization was able to escort about 1,400 veterans to see the monument for the first time.

Now, Honor Flight Michigan Legacy has a new mission: to build a World War II monument in . The monument would include all Michigan servicemen and women who fought for the United States during World War II. The monument is also expected to pay tribute to individuals who contributed on the home front during the war. In addition, a Walk of Honor is planned for the monument, with members of the public purchasing bricks to line the path leading up to the monument. Bricks will contain names of people, organizations, companies and more as requested by the purchaser.
