Don't need a study to figure that criminals need weapons to protect themselves from other criminalsRead More more than those without a record. To a criminal a gun is a tool of the trade. To a non criminal it is only a tool to protect oneself from criminals. Yes, we need some sort of gun control. One variable we cannot predict is who is mentally stable at the time they purchase a gun? Same with those who acquire driving licenses. See, you could have saved yourself a lot of money.
Homer April 24, 2014 at 08:35 pm
Well Ron, you did hit a key word - predict. It is not legal to use predictions against a person toRead More predetermine their fate. Each member of our society has a "free will." That's another key term you will find in the US Constitution. Additionally, much of the research funding was cancelled because the insurance agencies were poised to utilize the "predictions" to create a scale of risk to be used in determining premiums. (Not that they don't now try to factor such information into your premiums.) --- There exists a 'form of gun control' in practice, at the state and federal levels. And mental stability is one of the judgement areas in the process to purchase a firearm.

Let me get this clear. Will they be protecting, or trick or treating?
Steven Spiegel April 24, 2014 at 08:38 pm
As long as the NWACP can carry on with there hate and BS then So does the KKK I believe this countryRead More would be a hell of a lot better without either one of them. Its time to not be White or Black but to be Americans. I don't understand why when someone applies for a job they have to list there Race like that has a effect on how well qualified the person will be ! As long as there are groups that only support one race there will be hate . Its time to do away with the united African American college fund and just have a American College fund . Just like if there was no BTV those kids would not have that to make fun of . If there was a white television station or a white college fund that would be considered racist so why not have true equality and get rid of all ethnic related organizations that way there is no room for all the BS . I treat people the way I want to be treated no matter what color they are . It would be a hell of a lot better world if everyone did the same.
Steven Spiegel April 24, 2014 at 08:47 pm
As long as there is hate groups like the KKK and the NWACP there will never be peace in thisRead More country.

Thank you Alison I was thinking the same thing....
BIGBAKER.. April 24, 2014 at 07:13 pm
It`s just Baby fat, I had an UNCLE years ago 15 lbs and he was born at home, turned out to be aRead More regular kid.
Queena Armstrong Knox April 24, 2014 at 08:41 pm
Actually this is usually a sign of gestational diabetes. But not always....Alison and Erin. AndRead More BIGBAKER I've heard of bigger babies being born at home years ago too but that gets into the whole accuracy of the way they were weighed. My daughter weighed 9lb 1oz. I'm average size. My birth weight was around 7 pounds. My husband was a premie and weighed about 5 pounds. But he was a big man. Not huge. He was 6ft 1in and weighed about 190 at his heaviest. I'm 5' 3" and weighed 165 at full term. Sometimes the size of the baby is determined by ancestors long dead! My son weighed 7lb 12oz and he was born 4 weeks premature! Imagine where he was headed! So don't go blaming things that may have NOTHING to do with it!
The Rev. Edward Belczak, who served as priest at St. Thomas More Parish for more than 30 years, was indicted in the theft of nearly $700,000 in church funds. (Patch file photo)
Sue Czarnecki April 24, 2014 at 11:26 am
Another big black mark on the Catholic Church. I wonder how many more parishioners will acceptRead More & live with these crimes without leaving for another religion or just give up altogether?
DELandis April 24, 2014 at 12:22 pm
Ms Czarnecki, even you must live with the crime as it has already occurred, but I think the majorityRead More of Parishoners won't accept it especially if found guilty. I'm not defending the man, but he is entitled to his day in court. I also believe, even if convicted, most won't give up leave or give up their religion, as everyone should know, there are evil and corrupt people everywhere! So the best choice is to gather together the good amongst us and drive the wrongful ones away, not try to hide!
Luca Brazzi April 24, 2014 at 04:44 pm
Belczak got used to the good life at STM. Wined and dined by wealthy parishoners, travelved freeRead More first classs on trips and was treated like royalty. I can recall one time when he ranted and raved at the pulpit because some were taking his Polish Christmas hosts without leaving a donation. I thought that was strange. Now I know why he was keeping the money for himself. Never felt comfortable around him. A con artist!

Paula Larson April 24, 2014 at 08:58 pm
" Prosecutors contend he planned to murder the two teens and waited in the basement with aRead More bottle of water, a book, energy bars and two guns" How did he know that these kids were going to show up? Did he invite them just to kill them? If that's the case, it was premeditated. He shot one of them in the face after he was down and said he wanted them dead. I'd call that guilty of murder. His attorney is calling it stress.
Ana Ham April 24, 2014 at 09:08 pm
This was justified. He should not have been charged with anything. Free this man.

Northville spans between Oakland County and Wayne County. I think 8 Mile Road / Baseline road isRead More the border?
David Anderson April 24, 2014 at 08:43 am
A third of the ranking is dependent on the school's student participation in AP or IB. This is theRead More only indicator, according to the study, of college readiness. Seems too simplistic to me. What about those students who are not enrolled in IB and AP who go on to college. Isn't there a way to track college (or other post-high school) graduation back to the high school from where the student matriculated? Wouldn't this be a "better" indicator of college readiness?
Ahmed Ismail April 24, 2014 at 10:45 am
The one number that seems to skew this report in my mind is that the percentage of students takingRead More an AP exam is taken into consideration. How many students take the exam only indicates how much the school "pushes" the kids into AP classes, even if they really don't belong in an AP class. The real separator in the schools is the percentage of students who actually "pass" the AP exam. I understand some are even paying for the exams for the students now. For many schools, this "pass" number is incredibly low. Add that to the fact that a "pass" on an AP exam is only a 3 out of 5 score when most of the selective universities only accept a "4" or higher as a passing in order to give AP credit and you have a true picture of how the schools are trying to play the AP system just to increase their rankings on this list.

I don't disagree with you that we're becoming less and less a free country but it's wrong to blameRead More democrats alone. It wasn't dems alone that passed the patriot act. It hasn't been dems alone that have been re-uping it since it was passed the first time. On how bad Hillary will be as a president. Every president is bad in some ways. Reagan raised taxes more than a dozen times. Bush took us to war on two fronts with no way to pay for it. Clinton signed DOMA and DADT. Obama gave away the farm in order to get the Affordable Care Act passed. Papa Bush said that atheists shouldn't be considered Americans. Sure Hillary will be a bad president in some ways.... they are all bad in some way. I can tell you this much though, any president is going to be a worse president when the publicly stated goal of the opposition is to obstruct that president at any and all opportunities. The dems did it to Bush. The republican'ts are doing it to Obama. It's like Palestine and Israel, they'll fight to the death out of spite and habit, neither one of them knowing which one threw the first punch and not caring because winning is the only goal. What America needs are citizens that go into government for the good of the country instead of the good of their party.
Michael Hipp April 24, 2014 at 03:03 pm
Oh, one last point on your last post B. Dub. "Hillary presidency combined with a DemocraticRead More Congress." Ain't gonna happen. Republicant's have gerrymandered the states to absolute death. They have the House for the foreseeable future and they have a good chance at getting the Senate. I can't guarantee you who's going to win in 2016 but I can very well guarantee you that no one party will take executive and legislative branches, both.

with caller ID they should be able to point to the caller. Sorry but an out of state telephoneRead More number should be a tip off.
Eddie April 24, 2014 at 08:52 am
The caller used Skype, via the Internet, and will probably never be found if he took certainRead More precautions unless he's running his mouth about this prank.
Bob West April 24, 2014 at 06:20 pm
@ eddie, I wouldn't mention any specific phone-calling service in case any other arseholes areRead More looking for tips. But for better or worse, those calls are traceable. They have "add-ons" that can fool your friends, but certainly not the NSA. BTW, that phone service was bought by Microsoft a couple of years ago- so much for any illusion of confidentiality. By using it, you "opt in" to give up your privacy, just like with G-mail. Using a computer to make a prank call is a dumb move in itself. Any computer transmits a wealth of information. Non-smart phones are a lot less traceable than anything else. Have you ever seen how many items advertisers and other web sites use to uniquely identify your computer? They can't tell your name but track your unique computer. It's called "computer fingerprinting." As soon as you give your name at a web site they track, they've got you. Check this site sometime to see how unique your computer is-- https://panopticlick.eff.org/ .... I suspect that nobody's putting much effort into tracing this call, because in the big scheme of things, they've got more serious things to deal with. (Unfortunately, unlike our local PDs.) Shame this idiot got so much publicity from his crime. I think the glorifying news "perp walk" should be stopped in virtually all cases.

I am a whole hearted support of the United States Supreme Court and my 1st amendment right to sayRead More what I said because I support Cheif Justice Robert, But he and his group is dangerouslly Silly. Inner City Education where the teachers promoted a theory if I get one child to college after 13 years I have done my job the educational system in this country was built to make you a servent not a thinker. In a class of 30 that teacher and teachers focus on just one. I believe if he/she focus on 29 being able to read and write do math, understood science, then she did her job and still had work to do one was left behind. Editor, should never have removed the Black Panther. Without him, this thread loses, and the PatchRead More loses. He never said anything that was off color,or beyond what is acceptable on this forum. In fact, what you have done by removing him seems racist. He enlivened the conversation, wrong headed as he is,but isn't that the point? We were just starting to have some fun. Killjoy.
