St. Mary's Falls to Lahser in District Championship Thriller

The Eaglets looked poised to upset the defending district champs, but Lahser claimed a 55-52 victory on an improbable shot that's still resonating on social media.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's basketball playoff run ended in stunning fashion, 55-52, behind an 3-point shot from an unlikely source Friday. Yante Maten, Lahser's 6-8 center, dribbled past two Eaglet defenders down the sideline and turned away from a third to fire an off-balance 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left. It careened off the glass and into the net, and the Lahser-heavy crowd erupted. They stormed the Andover High School gym in jubilation after the Eaglet's final shot fell short. Several of Lahser's fans captured the action and shared their thoughts about the amazing game on social media all night long. West Bloomfield Falls to Lahser in MHSAA Basketball Districts

The Lakers were no match for Lahser's aggressive defense Monday at Andover High School.

The Lahser Knights’ combination of quickness, dominating defense and depth was on full display Monday as they beat West Bloomfield High School 73-34 in the opening round of the MHSAA district playoffs Monday night. The Knights, co-champs of the OAA Blue, jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and were in full control of the game by halftime 39-19. The Lakers (8-13) could never recover. Lahser junior Yante Maten finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks in somewhat-limited playing time due to the lopsided 60-24 lead late in the third quarter. West Bloomfield Hockey Takes Home First in Regional Tournament

The Lakers will next play Hartland on Tuesday in the MHSAA quarterfinals.

It was a good weekend for the West Bloomfield High School hockey team after they won the MHSAA regional championship this weekend. The Lakers defeated Royal Oak 5-2 Saturday night to claim the Division 2, Region 12 title, according to MIPrepZone.com. "On both sides, it's just about hard work," head coach Steve Kuza told MIPrepZone. "On both ends, you've got to outwork the team on the penalty kill. You've got to outwork the team on the power play, and therefore that's why we were successful." The West Bloomfield team is now 17-10 on the season, with Saturday's game their 10th straight win. West Bloomfield Girls Fall to Marian in District Final

The Lakers played hard against the home team but couldn't derail the Mustangs, who added a district crown to an already-impressive season.

The West Bloomfield High School's girl's varsity basketball team was outmatched by the Marian High School Mustangs Friday night, officially closing their 2012-13 season. Marian advanced to the next round with a 59-39 on their home court Friday night in the MHSAA district playoff finals. The Mustangs jumped out to 18-9 lead after the first quarter, and were up 40-16 at halftime. The Lakers, which beat Seaholm 58-35 Wednesday, outscored Marian 23-19 in the second stanza, but never threatened to end the Mustangs' season. Andover Girls Make Final Basketball Season Memorable

The Lady Barons prove they too can break records in the program's final season with merger pending; but fall in the district playoffs.

  Earlier this month, we told you about the record-setting performance by the Lahser Lady Knights 78-38 rout of Hazel Park. Not to be outdone, the Andover Lady Barons had their own record-setting week to close the regular season of their own. The team set a combined 12 records during the season. Among them: Team Rachel Rea Shannon Wilson Andover won the initial 'Battle for Bloomfield' with a 59-48 win over cross-district rival Lahser at a special game at the O'rena on the Oakland University campus in January. West Bloomfield Draws Lahser in MHSAA Boy's Basketball Playoffs

The Lakers enter the playoffs looking to snap a two-game losing skid, and will face the OAA Blue co-champs Monday.

  The West Bloomfield High School boy's varsity basketball team may have received the toughest draw in the MHSAA districts starting Monday at Andover High School. The Lakers, 8-12 overall, will play the defending district champs from Lahser at 5 p.m. in what will likely be a hostile gym filled with either Lahser faithful, and future Bloomfield Hills Black Hawks. The district plans to merge Lahser and Andover next fall. The Knights clinched a share of the OAA title by thrashing Farmington Hills Harrison 73-48 on Tuesday, but fell to Seaholm 60-51 Thursday. West Bloomfield Tops Seaholm; Faces Marian For District Title

The Lakers dispatched the Maples Wednesday, and will try to win the district title at host Marian Friday.

West Bloomfield High School's girl's varsity basketball team advanced to the district finals with a win over Birmingham Seaholm Wednesday.  The Lakers, now 9-11, topped the Maples 58-32 during the first round of the MHSAA playoffs at Marian High School, according to Mlive.com. They advanced to play host Marian at 7 p.m. Friday. The win snapped the Lakers' losing streak at two, and marked another strong defensive outing. West Bloomfield has allowed less than 39 points on average over the last four games. The Marian High School Mustangs reached the district finals with significant momentum from winning their first Catholic High School League championship in three years. Andover Boys, Girls Ski Teams Finish Strong at State Finals

The Baron boys finished runners-up, and the girls took third overall at the Division 2 finals on Marquette Mountain Monday. Marion skiers took fourth overall in Division 1.

  The Andover Barons finished a memorable 2012-13 season with strong runs at the Division 2 State Finals on Marquette Mountain Monday. The boy's team finished second overall behind Petoskey, and 10 points better than third-place Houghton/Hancock, according to MHSAA.com. They were runner-up state champions in both slalom and giant slalom events, said Coach Rob Brown. J.T. Stewart led the team with third-place finishes in both the slalom and giant slalom events. Braden Cleary (12th) and Ryan Stewart (13th in giant slalom, 18th in slalom) also helped pace the Barons. The Andover girl's team won the state championship in slalom and finished third in the giant slalom event, earning third place overall, behind Harbor Springs and Petoskey. …

Orchard Lake St. Mary's to Open at Prep Football Kickoff Classic

The Eaglets football team plays Oak Park at the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic on Aug. 30 at Wayne State University.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's will open its season against Oak Park High School at the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University this August. Formerly known as the Big Day Prep Showdown, the Prep Kickoff Classic will be held at Tom Adams Field on the campus of Wayne State Aug. 29-31. This year's program will feature the most comprehensive grouping of teams in the event's nine-year history, including back-to-back state champions Detroit Cass Tech and top Catholic League teams from Southeast Michigan, Cleveland and Toledo. “The Detroit Sports Commission is extremely pleased to announce the most diverse schedule of games in the nine-year history of the Prep Kickoff Classic,” said Dave Beachnau, DSC executive director…
