The Farmington Hills resident credits family and friends with helping her reach voters.
It is with great appreciation that I thank all of the community members who supported my re-election to the Farmington School Board. I am anxious to continue working with fellow board members, the administration, staff, students, and parents to face unprecedented challenges in public education. I could not have won without the help of my family and many friends who gave me support and joined with me to reach many voters in the community. Thank you for your devotion not only to my campaign, but to the school district we hold so dear in the community. I am so appreciative of all of your efforts. Karen Bolsen Farmington Hills

The former Farmington School Board candidate says he is truly humbled by the support.
My dear friends and supporters...Thank You! I have learned many things on the campaign trail; how to present myself, how to ask for votes and how to ask for help. These lessons I will never forget as long as I am alive. Every vote counts, every person matters and every voice has a sound. I am truly humbled that 6133 of those voices spoke in my favor. I am inspired that we gave it our best shot and only came up 21 votes short...Wow! You are all amazing! This was truly a labor of love and aspiration to join a wonderful Board of Education in an outstanding school district. It is with all this in mind that I respectfully concede to Dr. Murray Kahn for the position on the Farmington Public Schools Board for a 4-year term. My intent has always …
Sampson concedes; Murray Kahn wins a 4-year school board seat by 21 votes.
Farmington Public Schools board of education candidate David Sampson today submitted a letter to local media that ends any speculation over whether there will be recount in the race for a 4-year seat on the board. The race came down to the wire late Tuesday night, as only 125 votes separated the candidates once Farmington and Farmington Hills votes were tallied. A landslide 233-87 victory in West Bloomfield precinct 9 gave Kahn a 21-vote edge. While the small margin in a local race does not automatically trigger a recount, as it does in state-wide races, the option is available to a local candidate under state law. But Sampson has officially ended his campaign. In a message thanking supporters, he wrote, "I am inspired that we gave it our …

A Farmington Hills resident says the current school board has failed.

If a person is a critical thinker and uses data in his reasoning, it is without question that members of the Farmington Board of Education have failed miserably. Other than Tim Devine, all members of the Farmington Board of Education have seniority since at least 2006. They have had plenty of time to get education on the right track and collectively they have failed miserably. Despite having two members claiming to be experts in public relations (Brouillette and Brauer), the group failed miserably in the under-the-table negotiations regarding the Eagle School sale. The group fails/failed miserably in dealing with the life and death traffic situation for the 45 residents on Minglewood Lane created by out of control Highmeadow School …

As a former employee of the Farmington Public Schools and now a current parent, I proudly support the current school board members Karen Bolsen and Howard Wallach. In my almost eight years as an employee I was given the opportunity to work with both Karen and Howard on several occasions. They both have shared over the years how much they really care about our schools. They have worked diligently over the years to make sure that every student in the Farmington Public Schools is given the first class education we have grown to expect from the District. Since leaving the District as an employee I have continued to watch the Board make difficult decisions. These decisions were always based on what was best for the students of the Farmington …

Students were asked Oct. 20 to make their picks in local city and school district races and for two millages.
Students at Harrison and North Farmington high schools got a real taste of democracy Oct. 20, casting their votes in mock elections for the candidates and questions that will appear on the Farmington Hills ballot Nov. 8. Barry Brickner, the lone candidate for mayor, received 70 percent of the total vote; in the City Council race, incumbents Ken Massey and Randy Bruce, along with Richard Lerner, were the top three vote-getters. Winners for the two six-year seats open on Farmington school board were challengers Angie Smith and Samuel Ramsey III; David Sampson beat Murray Kahn for the four-year seat; and George Gurrola, who is unopposed for a partial term, got 80 percent of the total vote. Students favored both a public safety millage to fund…

The Farmington Hills resident disputes information in Supt. Susan Zurvalec's Oct. 28 letter.

In a recent article to the Patch, (Farmington Schools) Superintendent Susan Zurvalec is quoted as saying: “The clear fact is that not one single offer of purchase for Eagle was brought forward either before, during, or following the decision to sell to the ICA. The ICA was not given favored treatment; they simply were the only buyer to bring forth a formal offer of purchase.” The reason that there was no other offer beside the ICA for Eagle and none for Flanders, William Grace, Fairview, or Wooddale was due to board policy: A senior administrator for the District reported in documents from the Dec. 7, 2010 Board Committee meeting that they were “inundated with phone calls from brokers wanting to list the sites or indicating they had a …

At the start of the Oct. 18 Farmington School Board meeting, President Sheila Clay reviewed many points of pride as she addressed criticisms being made by some of the current candidates toward our schools. Her magnificently spoken words were filled with true sincerity and passion for the pride she, the rest of the Board, and the entire administration are so deserving to feel. Some might say that she was merely taking advantage of her position to grandstand for the incumbents currently re-running for Board positions. I say that it is about time that the Board tooted their own horn. In my 30 years of board watching, I have watched this and every other Board work as a cohesive team as they regularly gave 100 percent of the credit for so many …

Since moving to Farmington Hills in 1985, my involvement and commitment to this community has been and remains constant. Having been the recipient of the prestigious George W. Romney Award for Outstanding Volunteerism for both Farmington and Farmington Hills in 2011, I know firsthand what it takes to be an active, engaged member of our community. I have been through numerous school board elections. I have seen the ups and downs of the effects of funding of our schools. I know the countless hours put in by our school board members and their dedication to our students. With that, and with the knowledge that I carry by my participation in the community for 25 plus years, I strongly endorse the re-election of candidates Howard Wallach and …
The Farmington Hills resident says Gurrola took a 'unique approach' to the district's issues.

Having served on the Farmington Public School District’s Facilities Study Committee with George Gurrola in 2009/2010, I learned first hand what Mr. Gurrola stood for and what he wanted for our School District. As a member of the committee, George took a unique approach to the capacity and cost issues we were facing as a district. It was George’s forward thinking that got the committee to focus not only on the immediate problems which faced Farmington Public Schools, but also look at a long range (5-15 year) plan. His thoughts were not to provide a band-aid fix but rather take the opportunity to create facilities that would serve our children for the future. It is in these difficult economic times that make George Gurrola stand out as the …
