Student-Moderated Forum Challenges West Bloomfield School Board Candidates

West Bloomfield High School students felt dissatisfied by the school board candidate forum Oct. 5 and hosted a forum of their own Tuesday night.

Most high school students won't be old enough to go the polls Nov. 8 to vote on West Bloomfield's Board of Education seats. On Tuesday, however, a group of students influenced the election in their own way. A student-moderated forum in the media center of West Bloomfield High School brought together all six candidates to address issues which students felt were under-represented at a forum held Oct. 5 hosted by the Oakland County League of Women Voters. Seven moderators took turns asking questions and keeping time. Several others worked hard in the weeks prior to Tuesday to come up with the nine questions asked. "I learned so much from this experience and I feel so honored to be able to do this. It was really interesting to do public …

I sat through almost all the board meetings and saw both sides and most of the respective good and bad - and there was more than a bit on both sides. I do not see how being a "red shirt" and having a legitimate concern for your own economic welfare is automatically contrary to the best interests of students. What happened in our district was unfortunate, difficult and neither side's unilateral …   more ›

The residents has an opportunity each election to select and not select West Bloomfield Board. The majority of the residents feel that closing schools not only hurt residents, sales, neighborhoods and our children growth. None of this matter now but voters in the future elections must understand that other districts continue to improve their district without closing schools. I think to say the …   more ›

It appears that Hersh is teaming up with Moye and Beaty to get second votes. He can't turn to the other candidate's supporters because the other candidates are running on fiscal responsibility (not Hersh's version) and respect for open dialogue and public decision making. He can't vote for Moye and Beaty so my guess is that he will not chose Moye because she is running on rebuilding trust and …   more ›

Ms. Moye, What do you mean when you say " Restore credibility and educational excellence and rebuild trust and community relations"? At the candidates forum, you appeared proud of this communication. If you believe in these campaign slogans, you can not be fond of the board's leadership so why are you supporting the incumbent Hersh?   more ›
