A strong second half by the Barons nearly ends in victory in the school's final homecoming athletic event.
The first and only homecoming soccer game in Andover High School history nearly ended in victory for the Barons Friday night. But a kick from the far sideline glanced off the corner of the Royal Oak crossbar and into the goalie's arms as time expired. The game ended 2-2, and gave Barons fans plenty to cheer about during the final homecoming athletic event in school history. Greg Mitchem scored both Baron goals, including one on a high-pressure free kick with just over nine minutes remaining in the game. His first came on a powerful strike barely five minutes into the second half and tied the score 1-1. Any momentum the Barons hoped to gain, however, was cut short just 30 seconds later by a penalty in front of the Andover goal. Royal Oak …

Principal Rob Durecka issues a reminder to students in preview of the school's final homecoming weekend.
Andover High School Principal Rob Durecka certainly wants this weekend's homecoming festivities — the last in school history — to be memorable. Just for the right reasons. On Tuesday, he issued a reminder to students and parents about appropriate behavior throughout the week, and that the student Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced. While students are encouraged to zealously participate in spirit week activities and Friday's student pep rally, inappropriate comments, as well as wearing shirts that violate the Code of Conduct's Dress Code won't be tolerated, he said. "While we want our students to have fun during Spirit Week, please remind them to dress appropriately," he wrote in an e-mail to parents. Durecka also addressed the …

Patch's 30 sites throughout Southeastern Michigan reported on a ton of big news this week. Here's a look at some of the headlines outside of the Greater West Bloomfield area. 1. More than two weeks later and dozens of attempts to try and reconnect a lost Yorkie with his owner, a young couple living in Shelby Township have decided to adopt the adorable pooch. "We call him Georgie after Curious George because he got lost," said Nina Castellana, who found the lost dog on Sept. 10 outside her home on 25 and Dequindre while walking her own Yorkie Poo. The 21-year-old and her boyfriend, Sam Marino, have posted fliers in Shelby Township and Rochester, because the dog was found on the border of the two towns. They've also reached out to Patch in …

The school district will host two sessions for each current grade level affected by next year's merger of Andover and Lahser high schools.
Though the 2012-13 school year is barely underway, there’s understandably a significant amount of focus on the fall of 2013 and the official start of the new Bloomfield Hills High School. The current Lahser High School will house students in 10th through 12th grade in what will become known as the 'main' Bloomfield Hills High School campus. Ninth grade students will be at Hickory Grove. To help parents navigate the transition to the new high school facility, which won’t be completed on the current Andover site until 2015, the Bloomfield Hills Schools scheduled a series of forums beginning next month that will stretch into February. The forums will be broken up by student grade level to make each more manageable and effective in …

Readers do not appear to agree on whether ending the school's final season in history was the correct decision. Time for you to weigh in.
As the realization of Andover High School's decision to cancel the remainder of the 2012 football season continues to set in, not all observers agree it was the right move. While most of the early response to the news announced two days before their fourth game was largely sympathetic to players, some believe the administrators and team should have held out longer. The fact that it was the school's final varsity football season due to the pending merger to Bloomfield Hills High School in 2013 is undoubtedly a factor. "What a travesty," wrote Colleen Dunn Wymore on Bloomfield Patch's Facebook Page. "A storied program allowed to disintegrate. What are our Athletic Directors hired to do; crush a floundering team or provide creative …

The 2012 varsity football season ends early, leaving administrators scrambling to restore the homecoming experience for the final time in school history.
The corner of Andover and Long Lake roads was unusually quiet Friday night. No bright lights to drown out the moonlight, no thumping drum beats from the marching band, and no rattle of the aluminum stands shaking from the enthusiasm of a raucous crowd. There simply was no football Friday night at Andover High School. And despite the best efforts of school officials, coaches, parents and players, there will never be again. The Barons forfeited to Ferndale in the midst of a three-game homestand during the school's final varsity football season with the pending merger to Bloomfield Hills High School in 2013. A roster of injured and frustrated students quickly began to lose interest following a few winless performances on the field. R.J. …
