Andover Girls Make Final Basketball Season Memorable

The Lady Barons prove they too can break records in the program's final season with merger pending; but fall in the district playoffs.

  Earlier this month, we told you about the record-setting performance by the Lahser Lady Knights 78-38 rout of Hazel Park. Not to be outdone, the Andover Lady Barons had their own record-setting week to close the regular season of their own. The team set a combined 12 records during the season. Among them: Team Rachel Rea Shannon Wilson Andover won the initial 'Battle for Bloomfield' with a 59-48 win over cross-district rival Lahser at a special game at the O'rena on the Oakland University campus in January. Graduation Rates in the Bloomfield Hills Schools Approach 97 Percent

The rates are the highest among area schools, according to a new report from the Michigan Center for Educational Performance and Information states.

   The graduation rates from high schools in the Bloomfield Hills Schools district continues to top state averages, with nearly 97 percent of all students earning diplomas in four years, state records show. The data, compiled and released last week by by the Michigan Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) shows the four-year graduation rates at Andover at 95.40 percent, and 95.96 percent at Lahser. The International Academy graduated 100 percent of students. The CEPI — a state office that collects and reports data about Michigan's K-12 public schools — accounted for students who transferred into or within the district before the 2012 graduation. BHS Superintendent To Give State of District Addresses

Bloomfield Hills Schools Superintendent Rob Glass will update the community on several issues in multiple forums beginning this week.

  Bloomfield Hills Schools Superintendent Rob Glass said that among the most beneficial and enjoyable aspects of the new Bloomfield Hills High School consolidation millage vote last May were the number of town hall forums and presentations he made throughout the community.  Though there's no longer a bond to sell, Glass will continue the outreach and small-group approach to informing residents abut the district with a series of 'state of district' addresses. The first is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hills Middle School cafeteria, according to the district's website. Lone Pine Elementary Closed This Week Due to Burst Pipe

Classes canceled on Monday and Tuesday, but as pipe contained clean water, no health hazards are obvious.

Students at Bloomfield Hills Lone Pine Elementary School will stay home on Monday and Tuesday while crews work to repair a ruptured heating pipe, school officials said in an email to parents. A heating pipe in a radiator burst sometime this weekend, according to Principal Mary Hillberry, causing clean tap water which was steaming hot to flood the school. Bloomin' Kids preschools, which are operated at the same site, were closed Monday but are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday morning. School on Monday had been called off early in the morning as crews worked to repair the pipe, dry and treat the carpets, and dehydrate the air, Hillberry said.  Later Monday morning, parents were notified that K-3 classes would be canceled on Tuesday as well. …

High School Transition Forums for BHS Parents Resume

The final sessions for each current grade level affected by next year's merger of Andover and Lahser high schools begin tonight.

Though second semester just got under way in the Bloomfield Hills Schools, there's already a significant level of focus from parents, teachers and administrators on the fall of 2013 and the official start of the new Bloomfield Hills High School. And understandably so. The district's transition plan has the current Lahser High School housing students in 10th through 12th grades in what will become known as the 'main' Bloomfield Hills High School campus. Ninth grade students will be at Hickory Grove, or the 9th grade campus.   The Lahser Knights defeated the Andover Barons 48-47 in the nightcap of a special event dubbed the Battle for Bloomfield Saturday night at Oakland University's O'rena. The game featured the final scheduled time both rival schools faced each other with the pending merger to the new Bloomfield Hills High School next fall. Powered by center Yante Maten's 19 points and 9 rebounds, the Knights used a late rally to take the lead and held on to climb to 7-1 on the season. Khalil Gracey made winning basket and finished with 9 points and 5 assists. 5 Quick Steps Parents Can Take to Improve School Safety

Officials with the Bloomfield Hills Schools and local law enforcement reiterate these points to help emergency plans following the Newtown tragedy.

  In a letter distributed to parents Tuesday, Bloomfield Hills Schools Superintendent Rob Glass said parents play a large role in the district's  emergency safety plan. He also said that after a thorough review with local law enforcement — prompted by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school — he though it was important to issue these simple, yet important reminders to help keep each building secure and children safe. When visiting, remember to press the doorbell to be buzzed in and proceed immediately to the main office for sign-in. Lone Pine Students Fundraising for Emergency Utility Assistance

Students have been encouraged to earn their donation by helping out at home with family chores or special responsibilities.

The Heat And Warmth Fund (THAW), with the support of Michigan First Credit Union and WWJ Newsradio 950, is engaging Metro Detroit students again this year with "Pennies for Power," a school-based fundraising and energy education campaign. The Pennies for Power outreach program is directed at students in Southeast Michigan and includes a cost-free energy education component for students and a school-wide penny (and other coin) drive which supports THAW’s emergency utility assistance to Michigan families facing an energy crisis. New Bloomfield Hills High School Revealed

Designers show members of the Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education and the public what a 21st Century education experience will look like.

  The new Bloomfield Hills High School reached a major milestone Thursday as designers and construction officials presented their final schematic for what the new building will look like when ready in 2015. Representatives from architects SHW Group and construction engineers from Barton Malow showcased both the exterior and interior of the building on the Andover High School site that will house roughly 1,600 students, to the board and members of the public gathered at the Doyle Center. Both Andover and Lahser high schools will officially merge next fall and will be located at the Lahser and Hickory Grove buildings during a two-year transition period.
