I got a Nook Tablet (thanks Mom and Dad). Still learning how to use it, but except for a frantic call to the Barnes and Noble to find out how to get to the keyboard to register it, I've figured quite a bit out on my own.   more ›

Cooking for Special Diets: Simple Solutions for the Busy Holiday Season

Here are some quick recipes to save you time before vacation starts, the kids are home and stores are packed with last-minute shoppers.

Editor's note: Check back Monday on Patch and read about some special diet-friendly holiday events coming up around Oakland County. It's a busy, busy time of year. Whatever your faith or customs, this is an event-packed season and the race is on to get things done before vacation starts, the kids are home and stores are packed with last-minute shoppers. I say I'm going to work ahead every year and have my cards addressed and ready to go, my house decorated and holiday gifts made or wrapped by Thanksgiving. It has yet to happen. So, in these busy times, it's nice to have a few recipes that will help me save time. Tips for creating an enchanting tablescape that’s also comfortable.

To catch up on Megan Swoyer's first 11 steps of the “turkey day” planning process, read the full series.  There are dozens of torn-out magazine pages in my recipe files that don’t have recipes on them. Instead, the worn sheets showcase beautiful images and tips for the second (food is No. 1) most important key to a good meal: dining table ambiance. I come from the land of linger. My family sits at the table long after dessert is served, for coffee, after-dinner drinks, chitchat and big laughs. So the table décor, seating, etc. need to be as inviting as if we were sitting in front of the fireplace in the living room (which usually follows the table talk, before card games begin). I’ve been hosting Thanksgiving pretty regularly for the past …

The Fourth of Juy is Monday, and while offices are closed and the barbecues are fired up, you still may need to get out and around West Bloomfield Township. Here's what you need to know about what's open and closed.

Thanks for researching and publishing this information. I'm forever wondering what's open on a holiday weekend, including which ones qualify for a delay in the trash pick-up. You've saved me some time making phone calls or going to a store that's closed because of the holiday. And I'll also make sure to get to the library on Saturday for my weekend reads and DVDs.   more ›
