Here's your guide to holiday hours in West Bloomfield.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday on Monday is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of one of our nation's greatest civil right leaders. As such, many state and local offices, banks and credit unions, schools and libraries will be closed. King, who urged nonviolent resistance as a means to protest racial and other human rights injustices, was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis and would have turned 84 this past Tuesday. The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner delivered an early version of his I Have a Dream speech during a 1963 rally in Detroit. This year marks the 50th anniversary of that speech. UPDATED: Walled Lake Schools Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Updated: 4 p.m. Jan. 7, 2013 Source: Walled Lake Consolidated School District The 14th annual Walled Lake Schools community-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration is Monday, Jan 21 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Walled Lake Northern High School. The celebration will begin with a multicultural dinner from 5-6:15 p.m. with food from a wide variety of ethnic restaurants. During the dinner participants will visit student displays, from each of the district’s 19 schools, focusing on the theme “Let Your Voice Be Heard: Speak Up! Speak Out!” The dinner is sponsored by generous support from the PTA and PTSA groups from around the district. United We Walk Offering 'Unity in the Community'

Annual event to celebrate the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. scheduled Jan. 20.

West Bloomfield High School graduate David Merritt will deliver the keynote address at the annual United We Walk march, scheduled on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013. Merritt, a 2004 graduate who helps lead the mega-church Straight Gate Congregation Church of Detroit and is involved as an entrepeneur in philanthropic efforts, will speak on this year's theme of "Unity in the Community," according to organizers who addressed the School Board at Monday night's meeting. The 19th annual event kicks off with a one-mile march, beginning at 3 p.m. from the high school. Entertainment includes performances by the district's choirs, jazz band, orchestra and dance teams. Participants are asked to bring signs, posters and banners to carry on the march. The event …

What Does the 'Dream' Mean to You?

At United We Walk Sunday at West Bloomfield High School, I asked six people what they thought of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'Dream' in modern society. Here's what they said.

After Sunday's eighteenth annual United We Walk event on Orchard Lake Road, it would be difficult to argue that perhaps moreso than others, West Bloomfield residents have diverse opinions of what makes Martin Luther King Jr. Day special. About 300 joined in the multiculturalism-themed celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at West Bloomfield High School, which featured a performance from the Madrigal Chorale of Southfield, directed by the district's own assistant superintendent Robert Martin, as well as a speech from Silas Norman — a Freedom Rider and Bloomfield Township resident.
