'Legacy' Educates and Inspires Jewish Academy

The award-winning play by Shauna Kanter is being performed at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts.

Legacy, an Evelyn Orbach production in association with VOICETheatre currently on stage at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts, has been much more than a riveting few hours of theater for local students. During the past several weeks leading up to seeing Thursday's performance of the drama by Shauna Kanter, approximately 200 students from six local high schools have enjoyed workshops that discussed the history of the Holocaust, how the lessons learned connect to their own lives and how exclusion of, or discrimination against, any group or person can have painful consequences. 'Legacy' Opens at Berman Center Over the Weekend

A compelling story of courage and strength, 'Legacy' is an inspiring story about how one person can make a difference, even in the darkest of times.

Legacy, a play about the rescue of a Jewish family from Nazi Germany in 1939, opened at the Berman Center on the campus of the Jewish Community Center on Saturday and will run through Nov. 22. The drama, produced by West Bloomfield native Evelyn Orbach, Legacy tells the story of David, an American who, on his death bed, announces that he rescued a family out of Nazi Germany. The play is loosely based on playwright Shauna Kanter’s experience with her own father, according to a press release. “There is not just creativity in the arts, but also tremendous power.
