Grandmother of Slain West Bloomfield Teen Due in Court

Sandra Layne, who admittedly told police that she killed her grandson, Jonathan Hoffman will be in court Monday morning.

Sandra Layne, 74, a former schoolteacher, has an exam scheduled at 48th District Court in front of Judge Kimberly Small Monday at 11 a.m. West Bloomfield Police detectives said that Layne admitted killing her 17-year-old grandson, Jonathan Hoffman, on May 18. Hoffman, a senior at Farmington Central alternative high school, was shot multiple times in the condominium he shared with Layne and her husband in the Maple Place Villas complex, on the 6000 block of Brookview Lane.  Layne faces a charge of open murder and felony firearms possession. On May 24, Small had granted the prosecution a delay in the preliminary exam to allow for a test of competency. If bound over by a district court judge, a circuit court judge will determine whether she …

It stopped being an internal family matter when the shooting occurred. That makes it a potential crime and a matter for the state to investigate and if approprite to prosecute. How does shooting someone when they are down and calling the police constitue self defense? If the grandmother felt threatened by the grandson's drug use why did she not just kick him out of her house or call the police …   more ›

Slain Teen Had Failed Drug Test on Day of Shooting, Attorney Says

Jonathan Hoffman, 17, of West Bloomfield, tested positive for K2, also known as Spice, by Oakland County Medical Examiners.

Jonathan Hoffman, 17, of West Bloomfield, whose grandmother is charged in connection to his death last month, had tested positive for the drug called K2, also known as Spice, as part of his probation requirements on the day he was shot and killed, according to attorneys. Toxicology tests done by the Oakland County Medical Examiners' Office revealed the substances' presence in Hoffman's urine, according to a report in The Detroit News. Sandra Layne, 74, is charged with open murder and felony possession of a firearm in connection to the May 18 incident at her Maple Place Villas condominium. Initial blood tests did not reveal the presence of drugs in Hoffman's system. Court records show that at 10:38 p.m. March 17, Hoffman was stopped by …

I agree with Bonnie and what she had to say. I do not condone what Sandra Layne did. But I do undderstand that she must have been under a lot of stress and fear caring for this troubled grand son and no one to help her. The parents dumped him on the grandmother because they didn't want to care for him. The police and school knew of the trouble the boy was. But did not do anything to help or …   more ›

Attorney: Grandmother Felt 'Threatened' on Night of Teen's Fatal Shooting

Hearing for 74-old-old Sandra Layne of West Bloomfield charged in grandson's death is postponed. Father says he 'relented,' when Jonathan Hoffman wanted to stay behind after family moved to Arizona.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — The 74-year-old West Bloomfield grandmother accused of fatally shooting her 17-year-old grandson as he pleaded for his life during a 911 call spoke softly to a judge Thursday morning to authorize a delay for her preliminary exam. Sandra Layne, 74, is scheduled to be back before Judge Kimberly Small at 48th District Court on July 2 after Small authorized a motion from prosecutors to test Layne's competence. Prosecutors say Layne shot grandson Jonathan Hoffman, a senior at Farmington Hills Central alternative high school, multiple times Friday at the condo they shared in Maple Place Villas. Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota denied allegations that Layne had pre-planned Hoffman's death by asking her 84-year-old husband to …

Shera, First, I did not say she sent her husband out because she had "something up her sleeve." I said if she had been truly afraid of her grandson, as she claimed, she would not have sent him away, leaving her alone in the house with Jonathan. No, I can't say with certainty that he did not kick her. But if he did, it was to stop her from using the loaded gun she was pointing at him. She …   more ›

Jonathan Hoffman Remembered at Funeral: 'Unafraid of Being Himself'

Hundreds attend Tuesday morning funeral to honor the Farmington Central High School student who police say was gunned down by his grandmother at their West Bloomfield home.

SOUTHFIELD — Hundreds of friends and family packed the Ira Kaufman Chapel for the funeral service of 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman, three difficult days after police say he was shot and killed by his grandmother in their West Bloomfield condominium. Friends and classmates spoke late Tuesday morning in front of a filled chapel in Southfield, not of the circumstances of Hoffman's death, which sent shockwaves throughout the community, but of a Farmington Central High School senior who was coming into his own while remaining one of a kind. "He was unafraid of being himself, even if it meant he was different from everyone else," Rabbi Joshua Bennett of Temple Israel said in eulogy. "He wasn't just a computer geek. He was a cool computer geek…

It's time people stop making bad comments about alternative schools. Kids are not bad because they attend alternative schools. My son went there because he was not accepted at public schools, he did not have the right name and he did not have the right cloth's ect. he was bullied by the students and teachers. There was no excuse to shoot this beautiful young man. Grandma should have sent him to …   more ›

Friends Remember Jonathan Hoffman: 'Like a Brother to Me'

Two dozen people gather at Temple Israel on Monday night to share memories about the 17-year-old West Bloomfield resident who was shot and killed Friday .

As Max Dashevsky and friends were asked to recount minor details about their last day with 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman, the need to tell the bigger story grew Monday night. Interchangeably known as a road trip partner, video games teammate and a first best friend, Hoffman was remembered at a small gathering Monday night before his Tuesday morning funeral. The Farmington Central High School senior was fatally shot multiple times at his grandparents' West Bloomfield condominium Friday evening, officials say. His grandmother, Sandra Layne, was charged with murder Monday in his slaying. The teen's death and his grandmother's connection set off a shockwave in the community. With rain moving in Monday evening, Dashevsky and about 25 friends …

West Bloomfield Teen's Shooting Death Shocks Community, Classmates

A moment of silence will be held Thursday night at North Farmington High in memory of Jonathan Hoffman, 17, who will be laid to rest Tuesday. Meanwhile, his grandmother awaits possible charges by the West Bloomfield Police.

As the community comes to grips with the shooting death of Jonathan Hoffman, the 17-year-old's grandmother remains in custody by West Bloomfield Police in connection with the teen's homicide Friday night. Police would not say Sunday night if charges have been filed, or if they would be filed, against the unnamed 74-year-old woman. Her attorney spoke out over the weekend, saying she acted in self-defense. The Oakland County Medical Examiners Office confirmed Saturday that Hoffman, the son of a prominent divorce attorney, was killed by multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting was reported to police around 5:27 p.m. West Bloomfield Police Lt. Tim Diamond said the boy was pronounced dead after being taken to Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills …
