On Tuesday, Republican Congressman Kerry Bentivolio co-sponsored his first bill, the Enumerated Powers Act (H.R. 109). Bentivolio represents the new 11th Congressional District, which includes a portion of West Bloomfield. According to a press release, the bill requires Congress to specify the source of authority under the United States Constitution for the enactment of laws. “I am proud that the first bill I am co-sponsoring holds Congress accountable for its highest duty of upholding the Constitution,” Bentivolio said. “I was sent to Congress to protect our rights, not take them away. If this bill is enacted, it will act as a safeguard against unconstitutional legislation.” In 2011, the House adopted a new rule requiring that a …

Even relatives are drawn into the mix of odd stories coming out of the district, which includes parts of West Bloomfield.
In the final days before the Nov. 6 general election, the 11th District Congressional race has taken more twists and turns than a Six Flags roller coaster. The race started out in strange territory, when a review of re-election petitions for former 11th District Congressman Thaddeus McCotter showed he hadn't gathered enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. McCotter aides are facing trials in connection with the campaign scandal. Politico.com reported Nov. 1 that the brother of Republican candidate Kerry Bentivolio told Michigan Information and Research Service (MIRS), a subscription-based news service, that his brother is "mentally unbalanced". Phillip Bentivolio also claims his brother owes him $20,000; Politico.com quotes Kerry …

Democrats, third-party candidates in races for 11th Congressional District participate in League of Women Voters forum in Plymouth.
Candidates in the simultaneous races for full and partial terms representing Michigan's 11th Congressional District tackled jobs, among a host of hot-button issues Monday at a candidate forum at Plymouth District Library. Noticeably absent was Republican nominee Kerry Bentivolio of Milford, who is a candidate in both the partial and full-term races and will appear twice on many voters' Nov. 6 ballots. Democratic nominee Dr. Syed Taj of Canton, Green Party candidate Steven Paul Duke of Livonia and Libertarian John Tatar of Livonia, all candidates for a two-year term representing Michigan's newly realigned 11th Congressional District, appeared at the forum, moderated by League of Women Voters member Susan Rowe. Natural Law Party candidate …

Residents in the current 11th Congressional District will be asked to vote Wednesday, Sept. 5, to pick someone to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term. McCotter resigned from the seat earlier this year.
The much-anticipated special primary election to fill Thaddeus McCotter's (R-Livonia) remaining term will take place next week. The Sept. 5 election is happening on a Wednesday, not the usual Tuesday, after the state set the date in July. In Novi, Clerk Maryanne Cornelius said many people don't understand the difference between the August Primary and this special primary, "Turnout for Sept. 5 is likely to be low. I will be surprised if it's as high as 12 percent," she said in an interview with Novi Patch. In White Lake, Deputy Clerk Cathy Derocher said many people have come in seeking absentee ballots not realizing the notices they were getting were for the Sept. 5 election, not the upcoming November election. Derocher said the clerk's …
The retirement community's Political Awareness Committee organized Thursday's 11th Congressional District candidate forum.
The two candidates who will face off in November for the 11th Congressional District seat met on a stage in Novi Thursday, speaking to seniors at Fox Run about Medicare, Social Security, taxes and health care. While Kerry Bentivolio, a Republican from Milford, and Canton Township Democrat Dr. Syed Taj found a little common ground in their mutual desire to preserve Social Security, their positions on most issues were starkly different. But the point of the event, organizers said, was to make sure the retirement community's residents know what those positions are. Members of Fox Run's Resident Advisory Council, which works with administration and residents, recently formed a Political Awareness Committee because "it was important for our …

Kerry Bentivolio is victorious as the Republican candidate for Michigan's 11th District in the primary Tuesday.
Kerry Bentivolio has declared victory in the Republican race for Michigan's 11th District seat. According to unofficial results from county clerks, Bentivolio received 66 percent of the vote while Cassis received 34 percent. Bentivolio gave an acceptance speech to a group of supporters gathered at the Sheraton in Novi Tuesday night around 11 p.m. Shouts of "Kerry! Kerry!" welcomed him to the stage as "Eye of the Tiger" played. "We did it!" Bentivolio said. "You did it!" Cheers broke out after he accepted the candidacy. "It looks like Mr. B is going to Washington," he said. Opponent Nancy Cassis released a concession statement just before noon Wednesday. "When we entered this race my husband Victor and I knew we were undertaking a …

The 11th Congressional District Republican says the plan violates Michigan Campaign Finance Law.
An Aug. 1 statement by 11th Congressional District Republican primary write-in candidate Nancy Cassis' campaign led opponent Kerry Bentivolio to file a complaint Friday with Michigan's Secretary of State. According to a release issued by the candidate, the Detroit Free Press reported that Cassis' campaign "is asking supporters to wear special bracelets displaying her name into the polling places. This plan violates MCL 168.744(3), which prohibits the displaying of any material that directly or indirectly makes reference to any election within 100 feet of a polling place." The Free Press quoted Cassis' campaign as saying they plan to hand out red silicone bracelets bearing Cassis' name on primary day, Aug. 7, "to help supporters get the …

One thing I concluded from this forum was that problems are easy and exciting to point out, proposed workable solutions are hard to come by, and not so exciting to listen to. I liked Dr. Taj and David Curson out of all the candidates, though I admired all of them for their sincerity and enthusiasm. Nice to see the friendly collegial attitude among the candidates, too.
