At a press conference Monday, four West Bloomfield athletes formally announced where they'll pursue their respective sports after graduation. Coach Jeremy Denha described Lakers basketball stand-out Brandon Cole with one word: consistency. "He was always giving his best effort," Denha said of the senior, who started playing basketball in third grade. "I think Brandon's going to have a wonderful career at University of Michigan-Dearborn." During his senior year, Cole was team captain and played center. He was named to the 2012-2013 Oakland Activities Association All-Association honor team, among other honors. Sports teams from West Bloomfield High School and Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory play games at home for the first time this week.
The week ahead promises exciting action in and around the township as the West Bloomfield High School varsity football team plays in its home opener against Clarkston High School Thursday, while the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory varsity football team plays in its home opener against Toledo (OH) St. John's Jesuit High School and the Eaglets varsity soccer team plays in its home opener against Pontiac Notre Dame Preparatory Thursday. The Eaglets' football team will try to continue its good fortune after spanking Grand Rapids West Catholic High School on the road, 35-0, Friday. With a new head coach in Nate Belill and returning young stars in Erin Finn and Bjorn Kempf, the West Bloomfield High School cross country teams kicked off practice this week.
For some fans of the West Bloomfield High School cross country team, the 2011 season will feel like the dawn of a new era. Lee Averill’s retirement as track and cross country coach after 50 years as head coach at WBHS as well as 30 years of hosting a regional track event was marked with tears from some in May, and made room for new head coach, Nate Belill. For others, the 2011 season will feel like the next step in the development of a cadre of underclassmen who have the experience of leading the team last season as they attempt to make the leap to the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Finals.
