Thousands of Michigan Crashes Highlight Need for Work-Zone Safety Awareness

There were more than 4,000 accidents last year in work zones across the state, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Slowing down, concentrating and adhering to roadside warnings could help prevent thousands of accidents in Michigan work zones. Michigan Department of Transportation released sobering statistics Wednesday during National Work Zone Awareness Week. Last year, there were 4,530 crashes, 1,149 injuries, and 15 fatalities in Michigan work zones compared to 4,633 crashes, 1,312 injuries and 18 fatalities in 2011, according to MDOT. MDOT Launches Blog to Share, Chat With Metro Detroiters

#MetroMerge will allow residents and MDOT to interact on transportation issues.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has launched a new blog to allow residents to talk about transportation issues. The blog, #MetroMerge, is MDOT's hope to increase outreach to residents of MDOT's Metro Region, which includes Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties. Commerce Road to be Closed in Orchard Lake Village

Detour routes listed between Dec. 13-16.

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will close Commerce Road to through traffic between Orchard Lake and Hiller roads in Orchard Lake Village and West Bloomfield from Thursday, Dec. 13, through Sunday, Dec. 16, to construct a retaining wall on the south side of the road. The retaining wall is needed to support the slope adjacent to the road which has been eroding. During the closure, the detour route for through traffic is Hiller Road to Cooley Lake Road to Cass-Elizabeth Road to Cass Lake Road to Orchard Lake Road and vice versa. Source: RCOC press release

$196.5M Finalized for Michigan High-Speed Rail Funding

Funds released Wednesday to the Michigan Department of Transportation are moving construction forward for the Dearborn-Chicago high-speed rail route.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has awarded a $196.5 million grant to the Michigan Department of Transportation for track and signal improvements between Dearborn and Kalamazoo. These improvements will allow for speeds up to 110 mph on 77 percent of Amtrak’s Wolverine and Blue Water services between metro Detroit and Chicago, resulting in a 30-minute reduction in travel time between those destinations. “This is an important investment that will reduce travel time, improve reliability and on-time performance, and attract more passengers,” said Secretary LaHood in a statement. “We are creating jobs in Michigan, building our rails with American-made materials and growing …
