President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The campaign Obama won was the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. Exit polls show voters backing Barack Obama; national media give the state's 16 electoral votes to the president.
The polls have not been closed long, but based on exit polls results several media organizations have declared President Barack Obama the winner of Michigan's 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican and native son Mitt Romney. NBC, NPR, CNN, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post all have declared Obama the winner. Media outlets also have called the overall race for Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and in recent elections has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Michigan's voting goes until 8 p.m., but some polls elsewhere close earlier.
Michigan voters have until 8 p.m. Eastern to cast their Election 2012 ballots, but voting in other key swing states ends as much as an hour earlier, and exit polling could provide an early clue whether President Obama or Mitt Romney is closer to the White House. The earliest key state to watch is Virginia, where polls close at 7 p.m. Eastern. Voting ends 30 minutes later in the swing states of Ohio and North Carolina. As Michigan's polls close, the swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire close their polls, too. Nevada and Iowa, two other swing states that could prove pivotal in this year's presidential election, close voting at 10 p.m. Eastern. The presidential campaigns of President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are fueled with hundreds of millions of dollars donated by individuals in 2012. The watchdog Web site, opensecrets.org, estimates contributions nationally by individuals to Obama's campaign totaled $631 million. Romney's share of contributions by individuals was $384 million. The analysis is based upon the latest Federal Election Commission records released in late October. Closer to home, opensecrets.org reports that Michigan ranked 16th with $13 million contributed by individuals to both candidates, $7.8 million to Romney and $5.2 million to Obama. Our country faces an important week ahead; one can vote for Mitt Romney or President Obama. I would like to voice my opinion on the President because I deeply care for the direction of this country. President Obama is a foul-mouthed liar, and he called Governor Mitt Romney a “bullsh-er.” What type of dishonorable speech is that? That is so unprofessional and non-presidential. That is not the end of Obama. In Obamacare, he is trying to mask up all the details. For example, if an individual has cancer and wants to go straight to chemotherapy, they CAN’T. "Obama or Romney?" may be the hottest political topic in West Bloomfield this weekend, but local civics and government students are working to ensure that conversation continues through the next four years. The former presidential candidate is the latest Romney campaign surrogate to visit Michigan in hopes of winning the state on Nov. 6 for the Bloomfield Hills native.

John McCain, R-Ariz., will visit Bloomfield Hills tonight to help rally support for current presidential challenger Mitt Romney and raise funds for victims of Superstorm Sandy.
