5 Quick Steps Parents Can Take to Improve School Safety

Officials with the Bloomfield Hills Schools and local law enforcement reiterate these points to help emergency plans following the Newtown tragedy.

In a letter distributed to parents Tuesday, Bloomfield Hills Schools Superintendent Rob Glass said parents play a large role in the district's  emergency safety plan. He also said that after a thorough review with local law enforcement — prompted by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school — he though it was important to issue these simple, yet important reminders to help keep each building secure and children safe. When visiting, remember to press the doorbell to be buzzed in and proceed immediately to the main office for sign-in. Then be sure to wear your guest ID tag at all times.  Our staff may know you by first name, but police and first responders need help in identifying you as a visitor rather than someone who may be a threat…

Gov. Snyder Re-evaluates Concealed Weapons Laws in Wake of Newtown Tragedy

Michigan's governor tells reporters the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre gives him 'clear pause' on legislation that could allow gun owners with concealed weapons permits to carry inside schools.

Gov. Rick Snyder said Monday that he's not necessarily ready to sign off on Senate Bill 59 which would broaden Michigan's concealed-carry laws. On Sunday's edition of a special Meet the Press dedicated to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, CT, Randi Weingarten, president of the national American Federation of Teachers, urged Snyder to veto pending legislation that would broaden concealed-carry laws. The bills, passed by the State Senate in November, and the State House last week, are ready for Snyder's signature, according to MLive.com. However, he  delayed signing them for further review. Should and will recent events give him pause? Weingarten seems to think so, following the deaths of 27 in Newtown, including 20 children. "Schools have to be safe …
