Oakland Community College Culinary Grad Wins 'Cupcake Wars'

April Forbes, who attended the program based at the Orchard Ridge campus in Farmington Hills, won the $10,000 top prize working with her husband, James.

Oakland Community College Culinary Studies Institute graduate April Forbes of Waterford, and her husband, James, won first place and $10,000 in the top-rated Food network television show “Cupcake Wars” on November 18. The Institute is based on the college's Orchard Ridge campus in Farmington Hills.  The couple competed against three other teams for the honor. Their winning entry was a display of four different cupcake creations: peach melba, banana and peanut butter ganache, pumpkin pie and cherry cola.  April and James Forbes are the owners of Cakeria, a specialty bakery located in Pontiac that makes wedding cakes, tortes, cookies, breads, pies and, of course, cupcakes. Peters Brings Consumer Protection Panel to Farmington Hills

Experts share information and resources to consumers facing mortgage, credit card and other financial problems.

Zixta Martinez made one thing clear as she spoke Monday night about the federal government's new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). "Credit is not a bad thing by itself," said Martinez, who is assistant director for the CFPB's office of community affairs. "Credit is a good thing ... but we want to make sure it is being done in a responsible way."  Speaking during a public forum at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge in Farmington Hills, she said her agency's vision is to make sure the financial industry is fair, transparent and competitive when it comes to dealing with consumers. Credit counseling companies like Green Path are not owned by banks in a share holder type of capacity. They are owned by banks due to the funding received from banks.
