Treat Dreams The ice cream shop will double its kitchen space and extend its dining room to accommodate business growth, owner Scott Moloney says. The expanded kitchen will allow for "Treat Dreams After Dark" – adult ice cream camps where groups of friends can come in after-hours to make their own ice cream. An expanded dessert menu also is planned. Construction will start in mid-February and is expected to shut down the store for no more than three weeks. Butterfly Bake Shoppe in Berkley: The beloved bakery's last day in operation was Dec. 22. Dawn Schwanke, owner of the 2012 Readers' Choice award-winner, created everything from cookies for community events to a birthday cake for Motown star Martha Reeves. A survey of chefs around the country show locally grown ingredients, healthful kids' choices and sustainable fish rank highest among customers.
Restaurants sometimes surprise us with leading-edge cuisine, but owners and chefs know success depends mainly on pleasing the customer. A new national survey of 2012 menu trends gives high rankings to healthful kids’ meals, regional ingredients and fish that isn't endangered. "Locally sourced meats and seafood" and "locally grown produce" are the top two menu trend choices of nearly 1,800 chefs surveyed by the National Restaurant Association. Nutritious children's meals featuring whole grains, vegetables and fruit also will be on more menus, according to the online survey of American Culinary Federation members last fall.
