Get Your Questions Answered This Month During Kindergarten Roundup

West Bloomfield Gretchko, Doherty and Roosevelt Elementary School principals host programs Jan. 28-30.

If you've got a little one that will be entering kindergarten in the fall, the West Bloomfield School District is looking to make the transition a little easier. Later this month, the district will be presenting "Kindergarten Roundup," an informational session for parents and students at the district's three elementaries which offer kindergarten next year. At the round-ups, parents can see the school their child might attend, visit with teachers and get their questions answered. School officials advise that children should attend the sessions. According to legislation passed in late spring 2012, children must be five years old by Dec. 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. That date moves to Nov. 1 in 2013, Oct. 1 in 2014 and Sept. 1 in …

West Bloomfield School Board Considers Closing Schools

The West Bloomfield School District Board of Education listened to a final report from Western Demographics on school enrollment and facilities utilization.

Edited: 11 a.m., Aug. 28 To reflect updated costs for transportation Schools may close in the West Bloomfield district after the Board of Education considers recommendations suggesting its enrollment is not high enough to fill all six elementary schools. "We have enough students to operate four elementary schools and we have six," said Shannon Bingham, of Western Demographics, Inc., who presented a school closure and redistribution plan to the board on Monday night at West Bloomfield High School.  The district had a mild decline in enrollment in recent years, which is expected to continue, according to Bingham's research. Total school utilization is 80 percent and there are 3,276 empty seats in the district, according to his research. …

Michigan Districts Must Allow Students to Move from Schools with Performance Gaps

Although new data suggests the possibility of a growing performance gap between West Bloomfield students, their schools are likely exempt from certain new standards which affect nearby districts.

West Bloomfield Schools with large gaps in student achievement, as gauged by the Michigan Department of Education, will apparently not be required to facilitate much student-shifting between schools. Last week's release of school report cards, which includes the list of public schools meeting state standards through Adequate Yearly Progress, came with controversy in some local school districts. As part of a set of requirements for state-named "Focus Schools," districts have to allow a number of students to move out of any school in that category and into another designated school within the district beginning in the 2012-13 school year. Play Family Games, Help Roosevelt Elementary

The annual carnival Friday night will benefit West Bloomfield Schools.

It's Monday. The weekend just ended. However, it's always fun to look ahead at what's going on in and around town for the next weekend. We are going to pick some of the fun events daily to help you plan and count down until it's the weekend again. Our pick: Roosevelt Elementary Winter Carnival Where: Roosevelt Elementary School, 2065 Cass Lake Rd., Keego Harbor When: 5:30 p.m. Friday Why go: The annual Roosevelt Elementary School winter carnival will host carnival style games, a bounce house, indoor laser tag, facepainting, Science Alive, food, a Silent Basket Auction, a coffee can raffle and a prize room and more. It's a fun event which draws in families from all over to celebrate fun with children.
