'Fast-Moving Storm' With Freezing Rain, Snow to Hit West Bloomfield Friday

The sun is shining brightly over West Bloomfield today, but a wintry mix is predicted starting late Thursday night.

In the battle of spring vs. winter this week in West Bloomfield, winter is about to take the lead. Forecasters from the National Weather Service are calling for a chance of snow and freezing drizzle overnight. A "Hazardous Weather Statement" issued Thursday calls for a the freezing rain to develop after midnight in areas north of I-94, including West Bloomfield and all of Oakland County.  There is a 90 percent chance of snow and freezing rain on Friday. "A fast-moving storm system will bring accumulating snowfall late Friday afternoon through Friday night," the statement reads. "Confidence is increasing in appreciable snowfall in the 2 to 4-inch range across much of the area." There is a potential for the Friday evening rushhour to be …

Underground Equipment Trouble Knocks Out Power for 300 in West Bloomfield

Hundreds of homes near Farmington Road and Maple are without power Wednesday morning, DTE says, after heavy snow fell overnight.

More than 300 households in West Bloomfield are waking up Wednesday without power, according to the latest reports from DTE Energy. At least 300 DTE Energy customers are without power west of Farmington Road and north of Maple Wednesday morning, according to the DTE Outage Map. The outage is due to "problem with underground equipment," DTE says, with restoration times expected between 9:30-11:30 p.m. Wednesday. West Bloomfield is also waking up Wednesday with a winter weather advisory after several inches of wet, heavy snow fell overnight — closing West Bloomfield Schools as well as several area private schools. According to the National Weather Service, heavy snow can bring down tree branches and weigh down power lines, resulting in …

West Bloomfield Schools Closed Today Due To Winter Storm

Inclement weather closes public and private schools, and a winter storm watch is in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

West Bloomfield Schools will be closed today due to wintry weather conditions. It's the second time this month the district cancelled classes due to the weather, and the third so far this year since freezing rain closed schools all around Metro Detroit Jan. 28. Farmington Public Schools, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham and Walled Lake public schools are also closed, as are Orchard Lake St. Mary's and the Franklin Jewish Academy, according to WXYZ-TV.  A winter weather advisory extends into Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. While the snow will lighten up Wednesday morning and temperatures will hover just above freezing, that means the snow that does accumulate will be heavy and wet. Check with West Bloomfield Patch'…

Winter Storm Could Dump Up to 6 Inches of Snow on West Bloomfield

A "plume" of moisture will sweep across southern Michigan Tuesday evening, dumping a lot wet, heavy snow.

That groundhog is seeming less and less like a good weatherman by the day. More snow is in the forecast for West Bloomfield and all of Metro Detroit Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). In fact, a winter storm watch has been issued for the Birmingham area starting Tuesday afternoon. According to the NWS, a low pressure system will bring a "plume of deep moisture" across southern Michigan on Tuesday. The cold air means this area of moisture should be able to sustain a band of heavy, wet snow — up to six inches of snow, in fact. "There remains some uncertainty as to the overall track of this storm system and the locations which will receive the more prolonged period of heavy snow," the forecast says, noting that areas …

Snow Could Continue Next Week

An icy iteration of the wintry precipitation rapped at windows Friday in West Bloomfield; the National Weather Service predicts more could fall Monday and Tuesday.

Say it isn't snow! An icy iteration of the wintry precipitation rapped at windows Friday in West Bloomfield, and the National Weather Service predicts more of the white stuff could fall Monday and Tuesday. The forecasting agency issued a hazardous weather outlook Friday for portions of southeast Michigan, including Oakland County, that called for winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour through Friday evening. "A low pressure system tracking through the Ohio Valley could bring accumulating snow to the region Monday night and Tuesday," according to the advisory. "At this time, the best chance for accumulating snow will be south of M-59." The NWS forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, a chance of flurries and a high of 36 degrees, with winds …

Snow May Fall Next Week

It's possible that there will be snowflakes mixed with the rain over southeast Michigan Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fall may be over sooner than we thought. It's possible we'll see snow early next week. Although it remains too early to say, there is a small chance for snowflakes mixed with rain, said meteorologist Cory Behnke, of the National Weather Service (NWS) Detroit/Pontiac Weather Forecast Office in White Lake. "As far as southeast Michigan is concerned, we're going to have a secondary cold front track through the Great Lakes region probably on Tuesday night," he said. He said it's possible there will be snowflakes Tuesday night and into Wednesday. "We don't have it in the forecast," Behnke said. "But I can't completely rule out the fact that we won't see any snowflakes, either." The average first date of measurable snow fall one-tenth of an inch…

POLL: Are You Glad or Sad Winter is Wimpy So Far?

Halfway through the season, we've had little snowfall and averaged 30 degrees. There's even more of the same this weekend, according to forecasts.

Show of hands: Who went out without gloves this week or rode with a car window open? You're not alone. January just went out like a lamb, a two-months-early calendar twist that's unusual here. So is an average Metro Detroit winter temperature of 30.7 degrees, six weeks into the season, and snowfall barely above nine inches – compared to nearly 18 inches in January 2011. "It is surprising," National Weather Service meteorologist said this week from the monitoring station at White Lake. It recorded a Tuesday reading of 56 degrees and forecasts high temperatures of 40-44 degrees through Monday. In Rochester, unseasonal weather won’t stop a Snow Daze benefit for the Animal Care Network this Saturday afternoon. "We plan to host our annual Snow …

Michigan Blues: Take Care When Shoveling Snow

Keep heart health in mind and go slow as you remove snow from sidewalks and driveways.

With the first significant snowfall in metro Detroit making its appearance later in the season than usual, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and Blue Care Network (BCN) recommend residents keep heart health in mind and go slow when clearing snow from driveways and sidewalks throughout the winter. Shoveling snow can be hard work. Clearing snow for 15 minutes qualifies as a moderate physical daily activity recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General. However, for many sedentary, out-of-shape Americans, shoveling heavy, wet snow for 10 minutes is equivalent to running on a treadmill to exhaustion. Studies show major snow storms are often associated with increased emergency room visits for everything from muscle aches to heart attacks, …

UPDATE: Snow Over for Now; More on the Way Friday

Around an inch of snow fell in Troy this morning; an additional 1-5 inches are predicted Friday and Saturday, the National Weather Service says.

Snow has returned to Michigan, and some areas could receive up to six inches of snowfall by Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac. Much of Metro Detroit saw measurable snowfall Thursday morning; Troy received about an inch before the snowfall tapered off just after noon. Friday, another cold front will make its way to the area, bringing with it another 1-5 inches of additional snowfall beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Saturday morning. The National Weather Service predicts snowfall totals will be highest south of the Interstate-69 corridor, though "total accumulations are still a little uncertain." In a special weather statement, the weather service also warned that pockets of …

Welcome Back, Winter! Snow Expected Tonight, Tomorrow

Here's a look at the weather forecast for Thursday and Friday in West Bloomfield.

It's been a good ride these past couple weeks as Michigan residents enjoyed unseasonably warm weather – some in Troy even hit the links to play a round of golf on Friday – but we knew the mild weather just couldn't last. Today, rain will change over to a mix of rain and snow as temperatures fall from a high near 42 degrees to just above freezing by late afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac. The mix will then change over to all snow after 10 p.m. Snow accumulation of around an inch is possible overnight, and winds will pick up to between 7 and 15 m.p.h. with gusts as high as 21 m.p.h. Friday will be much cooler with a high near 29 and a low around 16. Winds will continue between 16 and 20 m.p.h. with gusts…
