Taking the Oath of Office: New Sylvan Lake City Councilmen

Here's a recap of what happened at Wednesday's meeting.

Highlights from Wednesday night's Sylvan Lake City Council meeting included: 1. Mike Zubrzycki, the Mayor Pro-Tem of Sylvan Lake was appointed Mayor by unanimous vote, while Councilman Brian Etter was appointed Mayor Pro-Tem by a 4-1 vote. The winners of the Nov. 6 council election, Eucharist Cassar and Russell Meskin, were sworn in.  2. The weekly day of trash collection on Wednesday will soon be no more, as the council approved a move to Thursdays. The move to move was suggested by the Rizzo Environmental group after the Sterling Heights-based trash hauler absorbed the city's trash pickup from Richfield Equities in the fall. Meet the Sylvan Lake City Council Candidates

Four candidates in the Nov. 6 election seek two spots available on the city council.

As we look ahead to November's elections, West Bloomfield Patch is devoted to bring you the information you need about the big races in town. Today, we bring you questionnaires from the four candidates in Sylvan Lake vying for two separate seats on the City Council. Candidates for city council participated in a voters forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters Oakland area Oct. 15, answering the following questions: What is your position on outsourcing police? In light of the Nov. 2012 ballot proposal which saw Sylvan Lake residents approve a 5-mill levy increase to fund public safety in town, the candidates took varied views on the "touchy subject." Education and professional background I graduated Wayne State University with a Bachelors Degree in Business and then worked as an auditor and accountant and obtained my Certified Public Accounting Certificate (CPA). After a few years working as a CPA I started my own retail business owning and operating a chain of Hallmark Card and Gift Stores. Education and professional background In 1933 our father began into Real Estate Management. I began taking part in 1969 doing maintenance in the areas of boiler work, heating, electrical, plumbing decorating, roofing, underground work, paving ect. While continuing with father and family, in 1977 I branched out into a individual venture. City Council Candidates Debate Liquor, Beaches and More at Forum

The Oakland County League of Women Voters hosted a voters forum Monday night at the Sylvan Lake Community Center.

Should the City of Sylvan Lake allow restaurants to serve liquor by the glass? Should beaches be opened up to the public to use in order to possibly secure money from state or federal grants? Four candidates for the Sylvan Lake City Council addressed these issues and more Monday night in a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters Oakland area. Eucharist Cassar, Russell Meskin, Jack Shepp and Megan Rogers-Zumbach answered questions from league members and forum moderator Jerry Burden. Meskin is the lone incumbent running for one of two spots open for three-year terms. Reel in a Good Time at the Big Fish Festival This Weekend

Eighth-annual event kicking off Saturday has moved to Abbott Middle School this year.

Families seeking a boatload of fun before the beginning of the school year need not look further than the Big Fish Festival this weekend, according to organizers. The eighth-annual event, hosted by the Bloomfield North Area Chamber of Commerce, combines art, entertainment and sports to benefit local area businesses and other entities, said Mel Hager, vice president of the chamber. Over 2,000 are expected as the free event moves from Roosevelt Elementary School in Keego Harbor to Abbott Middle School in Orchard Lake Village this year, Hager continued, in the hopes of making car parking easier on a larger road and offering more space for business booths.  Indeed, Hager said, the event is known for its "big fish" (which translates to "Keego" …

John Reed, Julie Beaty to Run for West Bloomfield School Board

The filing deadline for one position on the West Bloomfield School Board and other local races was Tuesday.

Earlier this week, we told you about the filing deadline for seats in the Greater West Bloomfield area in the Nov. 6 general election. Though we already knew who will be on the ballot for various state and regional elections following the Aug. 7 primary election, these races weren't official until now. West Bloomfield School District Residents district-wide will be asked to vote for one new member on the West Bloomfield School Board. President Bruce Tobin, whose fifth term ends Dec. 31, withdrew from the ballot after paying a $100 fee to bypass the number of petitions required to gain entry. Tobin had filed to run Jul. 10 and withdrew on Tuesday. The West Bloomfield residents who will be running for Tobin's spot on the board for one six-…
