Auto dealers present annual awards for videos about underage drinking.
Teen video-makers from West Bloomfield, Lake Orion, Howell and Utica are among winners of annual Courageous Persuaders scholarships presented by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association Education Foundation. They and other students share $18,250 in awards announced Tuesday night in Auburn Hills for 30-second public service announcements about underage drinking risks. Videos by these winners from Patch communities are embedded at right: "It takes courage for high school students to produce these sorts of messages" about health, safety and legal risks of drinking alcohol before age 21, broadcast teacher Roger Smith of Lake Orion High told Patch earlier this year. Another of his students also was a $1,000 winner last year. The 12th annual …

Best in Show honors for Adam and Daniel Cooper earn April 28 screenings at DIA.
Two local siblings will be honored for visual creativity and imaginative storytelling at a prestigious setting this month. Young filmmakers Adam and Daniel Cooper of West Bloomfield High won Best of Show honors in the 44th Michigan Student Film and Video Festival. An animated short by Daniel and a live-action comedy by both will be part of April 28 screenings in the ornate, 1,200-seat Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts. War of the Species, a five-minute animation embedded at right, pits "militaristic birds" against a man with a slingshot. It parodies The Matrix (1999) and Pearl Harbor (2001) feature films. The brothers, who created the festival's promotional video (also accompanying this article), are honored jointly for…

The annual event Friday at West Bloomfield High School features workshops, awards and public screenings in the evening.
Nine film and TV pros from around Metro Detroit will encourage teen filmmakers already following their paths as part of the ninth Orchard Lake Student Film Festival at West Bloomfield High School. About 30 films by high school students are entered in the festival, a daylong event with workshops, awards and evening screenings for the public. For aspiring directors, producers and actors, it's a small-scale version of the Sundance Film Festival, a career-making indie showcase that ended Sunday in Utah. "Having work judged by professionals can be reassuring for students, letting them know they're on the right track," said video production instructor Kevin Walsh of West Bloomfield High. Walsh and Micah Greene, theater arts program director at …

Fifteen West Bloomfield High School students recently visited New York City as part of a new class designed to give students field experience.
Kevin Walsh's new video production class at West Bloomfield High School is giving students a unique opportunity to learn outside the classroom — one that recently took 15 students to New York City to take part in a professional setting. The one-class course, titled Field Production, was created this past summer to give students already experienced in introductory video productions coursework at WBHS an opportunity to film events that otherwise might not be filmed, Walsh said. Students visit various locations around town as demand arises for the filming of district events at different schools, such as the recent WBHS varsity hockey season opening game at Orchard Lake St. Mary's and a publicity tour with actress Arielle Kebbel. "I think a …
