National Teacher Appreciation Day means it’s a good day to stop and recognize our teachers for all their hard work and efforts.
It's National Teacher Appreciation Day, and in West Bloomfield Schools, that means it’s a good day to stop and recognize our teachers for all their hard work and efforts. On the West Bloomfield Patch Facebook page, several parents and community members took the time to mention just a few of the people in our school district who have had an impact on their child's life. "Julie Bednark-Zawalski because she is always thinking of how she can help her students," Tim Bednark wrote. "The teachers at Doherty Elementary and OLMS are amazing," Kellie Crimmings Gabalski wrote. Do you have a teacher that you want to thank? Does one of your children’s teachers show up every day, ready to inspire or is there a teacher from your past who believed in you …

Colleagues, parents, and former students line up one last time to honor principal Kathy Sheiko as she retires after 26 years at Green Elementary School.
Hundreds of fellow teachers, parents, and former students ranging from kindergartners to law school students filled the gymnasium of Green Elementary School Friday afternoon at an open house in honor of retiring principal Kathy Sheiko. Several of the attendees wore T-shirts imprinted with the name "Sheiko Elementary," reflecting the surprise announcement made at the June 13 school board meeting that Green would be renamed in honor of Sheiko and her 26 years of service. Parents, students, and colleagues remember Sheiko for her dedication and her hands-on approach to leadership. “You’d find her on the playground, in the kitchen; she was everybody’s caretaker,” said Janis Schiffer, a social worker at Green. “I feel like I’m losing my other …

West Bloomfield Families Stand United is trying to rebuild a sense of community, which its organizers claim has been lost in negotiations between the school district and its teachers union.
Wearing blue T-shirts that conveyed a message of promoting civil, nonpartisan discourse, West Bloomfield Families Stand United held its inaugural meeting at the Main Library on Monday night. “We need to move on in order to focus on what is really important — our children’s education and futures,” organizer Nancy Cooper read from a statement publicly drafted at the meeting to be read at the next West Bloomfield School District board meeting Monday at West Bloomfield High School. “We demand you to negotiate openly, creatively, and in good faith in order to come to an agreement on the teacher’s contract,” continued Cooper, 40, of Orchard Lake, who has three children in the school district. Teachers, represented at the local level by the West …

Speed? There has been no speed here. These "negotiations" have been going on since the Fall of '09. The Boards's position has never officially moved throughout negotiations, mediation, fact-finding and mediation. Meanwhile, every day this school year we don't have a new contract we live by the old contract, costing thousands of dollars EVERY DAY. So if the community's awareness is finally raised …   more ›
