School Board Responds to Bus Ad Controversy

"My integrity has been challenged, and I resent it," Nelson Hersh said Monday of allegations that he may have been aware that his orthodontist practice had free advertising inside school buses.

Advertisements for West Bloomfield Board of Education Treasurer Nelson Hersh’s orthodontist practice were present inside 15 district buses for more than four years. At Monday's school board meeting, the board collectively reiterated that it was not aware that ads appeared on buses from spring 2007 until they were taken down in August after school board candidate Carol Finkelstein informed the board of the ads at its Aug. 30 meeting. The board took no action to internally investigate the allegations, which West Bloomfield School District Superintendent JoAnn Andrees called "a nonissue," according to an Oct. 23 follow-up article in The Oakland Press, which broke the story Oct. 18. Finkelstein expressed outrage at Monday's meeting, during …

Student-Moderated Forum Challenges West Bloomfield School Board Candidates

West Bloomfield High School students felt dissatisfied by the school board candidate forum Oct. 5 and hosted a forum of their own Tuesday night.

Most high school students won't be old enough to go the polls Nov. 8 to vote on West Bloomfield's Board of Education seats. On Tuesday, however, a group of students influenced the election in their own way. A student-moderated forum in the media center of West Bloomfield High School brought together all six candidates to address issues which students felt were under-represented at a forum held Oct. 5 hosted by the Oakland County League of Women Voters. Seven moderators took turns asking questions and keeping time. Several others worked hard in the weeks prior to Tuesday to come up with the nine questions asked. "I learned so much from this experience and I feel so honored to be able to do this. It was really interesting to do public …

School Board Candidates Address Issues of Start Time, Winter Break

Students questioned candidates Tuesday in a moderated forum.

The candidates vying to lead the West Bloomfield School District were asked questions Tuesday about issues ranging from an earlier start time to the possibility of reviving February break as part of a student-moderated forum at West Bloomfield High School. Represented at the forum were Julie Beaty, Karen M. Faett, Nelson Hersh, CharRhonda Moye, Carol Finkelstein and John Reed, who answered questions from seven different moderators. Hersh is the lone incumbent running for one of two open seats on the seven-member board; Trustee Melanie Torbert will not run for re-election. School Board Discusses Head Count, Bus Ads

The West Bloomfield School District Board of Education met Monday night.

The unofficial head count Oct. 5 that indicated a decline in enrollment was the focus of an administrative report and discussion Monday by the West Bloomfield School Board, with members agreeing to be "aggressive" in investigating the cause in the drop. The board, which met at the West Bloomfield High School library, noted that the decline was greatest in the elementary level, whereas some middle school grades actually increased in size. Assistant Superintendent Rick Arnett said the decline was expected, but that projections were that the number would be about 50 fewer students; the actual count showed 127 fewer students in the district. "We ask administrators to make calls and check, we send out invites, we work with our local realtors…

Additional School Board Candidate Forum Scheduled

West Bloomfield High School students will take their turn in questioning the hopefuls next week.

Candidates for the West Bloomfield School District Board of Education have been asked to participate in a second forum, this time one moderated by students from the high school. Questions for the forum, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at West Bloomfield High School, will be generated by students and approved by Principal Tom Shelton and the sponsoring teachers from the high school's Law Club and Political Leadership classes. "The students' staff sponsors Alycia Chase and Katherine Law, along with Tom Shelton, are committed to making this an experience that is fair and equitable to all involved. Additionally, it is sure to be an educational experience for the students as well," district spokesperson Pam Zajac wrote in an email Tuesday…
