Chanukah Wonderland Lights Up Orchard Mall

West Bloomfield's Dave Kresch highlights three days of food and fun in West Bloomfield in celebration of the annual Jewish holiday.

As the temperature noticably continues to drop and the nights grow longer, Chanukah Wonderland offered a warm welcome to the community Tuesday, literally. The lighting of a 12-ft. candelabrum, called a menorah, by Dave Kresch, a West Bloomfield resident who survived the Holocaust, highlighted three days of food and fun at Orchard Mall Shopping Center this week. Bais Chabad Torah Center sponsored the three-day tribute between Dec. 9-12 to the annual, eight-day Jewish holiday, which is one of the most widely-celebrated holidays and a favorite amongst children. Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah) takes place this year from sunset Dec. 8 until the evening of Dec. 16. 5 Things to Know This Week in West Bloomfield

The holiday season and charity benefits highlight the local news this week.

Five local stories to keep an eye on Dec. 9-15: 1. Hanukkah continues through Dec. 16. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Jews over Syrian-Greek invaders in 164 BCE (Before Common Era). Hanukkah (Hebrew for dedicate) refers to the rededication of second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and is celebrated by lighting one additional candle in a candelabrum, called a menorah for eight days. 2. Enjoy Chanukah Wonderland at Orchard Mall Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Organizers will offer an all-new Chanukah Lights. Warm up with the festive tunes of the Kidz Klez Band of Michigan and their twenty-piece band and eat hot soups, latkes, donuts and cider.
