West Bloomfield High School junior Erin Finn improved on her own course record to win the regional meet at Hess-Hathaway Park Saturday.
West Bloomfield High School and Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory will both be sending cross country runners to the Michigan High School Athletic Association lower peninsula state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Nov. 5. Lakers junior Erin Finn placed first at the MHSAA Division 1 regional finals Saturday with a course record time of 17 minutes, 59.2 seconds, which head coach Nate Belill said is 14 seconds faster than last year's first place finish time, at Hess-Hathaway Park in Waterford. Finn was dominant Saturday in winning her 11th-straight race of the season by a time 1 minute, 47.7 seconds faster than second place. West Bloomfield High School junior phenom Erin Finn's historic season continued Saturday as she won the All Oakland County Championship meet at Kensington Metropark in Clinton Township. Finn's time of 17:41 was one second shy of Rochester's Megan Goethals' record of 17:40, which she set as a senior in 2009. The win comes the month after setting a course record in victory at the Linden Classic. Finn has won all six races she's run this season, including the recent Spartan Invitational. Oxford junior Brooke Kovacic finished second Saturday at 18:50. With a new head coach in Nate Belill and returning young stars in Erin Finn and Bjorn Kempf, the West Bloomfield High School cross country teams kicked off practice this week.
For some fans of the West Bloomfield High School cross country team, the 2011 season will feel like the dawn of a new era. Lee Averill’s retirement as track and cross country coach after 50 years as head coach at WBHS as well as 30 years of hosting a regional track event was marked with tears from some in May, and made room for new head coach, Nate Belill. For others, the 2011 season will feel like the next step in the development of a cadre of underclassmen who have the experience of leading the team last season as they attempt to make the leap to the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Finals. Oakland County high school athletes competed in the 52nd Annual Oakland County Track and Field Championship Meet Friday at Milford High School.
On Friday, area high school athletes competed in the 52nd Annual Oakland County Track and Field Championship Meet at Highland Milford High School. The most notable performance of the night for West Bloomfield High School was that of sophomore Erin Finn, who took home a County Title in the girls' 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 29.76 seconds. Finn also took second place in the 1,600-meter run.
