The Lakers football team convincingly won its Homecoming game over Pontiac after assault incident last week.
After an ugly incident last week which resulted in one player being taken from the playing field in handcuffs, the West Bloomfield High School football team jumped out to an early lead against Pontiac at Homecoming Friday night and didn't look back. The 31-14 win capped an "emotional" period for the team and its coaching staff, the latter of which lost its defensive coordinator over an apparent disagreement with head coach Ron Bellamy stemming from an alleged assault and battery of a Stoney Creek assistant coach by a Lakers football player. "In my football career of playing and coaching, I’ve never been through anything as emotional as this week," Bellamy said. "We didn’t practice Monday. We just had a team meeting. I told my boys how I …

The West Bloomfield High School student responsible for striking a 66-year-old Stoney Creek football coach on the field Friday night was charged with assault and battery Thursday morning, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office (OCSO). The student will be given a court date in Oakland County Probate Court. Capt. Michael Johnson, commander of the Rochester Hills substation for the OCSO, said that the student, 16, is a player on the football team who approached a Stoney Creek assistant coach after the game was over and punched the coach in the jaw, knocking him unconscious. The coach was identified by Rochester Community Schools as Harold "Buzz" Zube, the father of varsity head coach Brad Zube, who was helping to coach the varsity …

Lakers varsity football season off on the right path after home win against Jackson.
The score: West Bloomfield 42, Jackson 7 The star: The Lakers defense, led by sophomore lineman Eddy Wilson and senior defensive backs Chance Monarch and Norm Burns, forced four fumbles and one interception against an experienced Vikings offense. The turning point: The Lakers came out of halftime with the proverbial wind to their back after a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage by speedy sophomore Michael King to go up 28-7. A forced fumble on the ensuing Jackson drive by Wilson seemed to knock the wind from the Vikings for good. The story: The Lakers bounced back after an opening kickoff touchdown run by Jackson senior Caleb Moss to not allow another point. Freshman quarterback Trishton Jackson played the role of "game…

Wide receiver Greg Raspberry goes into an organized workout session with NFL scouts later this month after a lifetime of preparation.
Greg Raspberry's path to stardom in the National Football League may have taken a detour through West Bloomfield Schools, but he's a better player for it. Raspberry, 24, recently finished his first year as Orchard Lake Middle School's seventh grade boys basketball team head coach (record: 12-1) after working in the fall as an assistant coach on the West Bloomfield High School varsity football team as well as head coach of the Lakers' freshman football team (record: 8-1). He's done it with a smile on his face, although he'd be the first to say that he'd prefer to be on the field. Raspberry hasn't played much since the 2011 NFL lockout cut short a chance to showcase his talents at an organized workout session in front of NFL scouts. However…

West Bloomfield and Orchard Lake St. Mary's, among many local schools, hosted events for athletes to announce post-secondary plans.
West Bloomfield High School varsity football may have struggled this past season, but head coach Ron Bellamy said he believes they won't be among the bottom of the standings for much longer. The reason, actually, is because of four departing seniors — Kyle Croskey, Patrick Russell, C.J. Brathwaite, and Chauncey Briggs — who signed their letters of intent to play at university level in the media center Wednesday. "These guys set the foundation, wins and losses aside. These were some of the guys who worked the hardest, and you can see that in where they're headed. Guys we still have want to emulate these guys, who are going to great schools," Bellamy said. Brathwaite in particular was reported to be the apple in the eyes of Pacific-12 …

West Bloomfield High School senior C.J. Brathwaite and Orchard Lake St. Mary's senior Spencer McInnis will both play football in the Mid-American Conference.
A pair of local, high school senior football players are headed to play college ball in the Mid-American Conference on scholarships after verbally committing this week. Scout.com reports that Orchard Lake St. Mary's senior tailback Spencer McInnis, who helped lead the Eaglets to the Division 3 State Championship in November, will play at Miami (OH), while West Bloomfield High School senior tailback C.J. Brathwaite, who finished with five touchdowns in one game against Royal Oak, has committed to Kent State. Brathwaite had originally committed to Washington State, but told ESPN.com on Jan. 18 that a coaching change led to his verbal committment being revoked by the new regime. Lakers head coach Ron Bellamy commented afterward, "I told (…

The senior will play football at Washington State University next fall.
C.J. Brathwaite, a West Bloomfield High School senior who enjoyed a breakout football season this past fall, committed to play for Washington State University next fall, WBHS athletic director Pat Watson said Monday. "He'll have a full-ride scholarship to play football," Watson said. "I was fortunate enough to coach C.J. in his freshman year on the basketball team — he's a great kid and a great student-athlete." Scout.com's Allen Trieu broke the story Monday afternoon, after writing in mid-November that the running back had attracted an offer from the Pac-12 Conference school based in Pullman, WA. Lakers assistant coach Reggie Wynns confirmed that Brathwaite would be playing only football as a Washington State Cougar. "C.J. works hard, he …
