Walled Lake Schools administration expects demolition to be complete at end of May 2013.
At a time in which discussion of vacant school buildings has become a hot topic in the Michigan state legislature, the Walled Lake Consolidated School Board voted to award bids for demolition of Maple and Twin Beach Elementary schools Thursday night. The contract for $270,000 with Adamo Group of Detroit was the best of 12 bids, according to Director of Operations Bill Chatfield. Twin Beach, located at 7149 Oakley Park Rd., will cost the district $107,500 to do, while Maple at 7389 Maple Rd. will cost $187,500. The final sum includes a $25,000 discount to handle both buildings. The cost will be paid from the district's sinking fund. The board had voted Nov. 15 to proceed with demolition of both schools amid pending legislation which would …

Closed Walled Lake Consolidated district elementary schools honored in ceremonies Sunday.
Hundreds turned out to Maple and Twin Beach elementary schools to reconnect and reminisce on the schools which will be graduating their final classes this week. Walled Lake Consolidated Schools teachers and administrators past and present were among those offering public comment as part of the district's programming. The tone seemed to suggest unity in difficult times. "We're a very big family," said Nancy van Leuwen, a current school board member and retired teacher from Twin Beach. "Those thoughts, those feelings, that caring, that love will continue as long as we're around." The school board voted to close schools last summer in part due to declining enrollment in elementary schools. Both Twin Beach and Maple — built in 1954 and 1972, …

Here are three key facts of the redistricting plan, which was approved by a 6-1 vote Thursday.
In response to the planned closure of Twin Beach and Maple elementaries as announced in August, the Walled Lake Consolidated School Board voted Thursday to approve redistricting plan "B/C." The vote, which falls in line with Superintendent Kenneth Gutman's recommendation Feb. 2, was approved with a 6-1 vote in front of a crowd which filled the seats at the Walled Lake Educational Services Center. Two public comments were made against the plan, which will alter feeder patterns, bus routes, and move students from three other schools in addition to those at the closing schools. Board Secretary Denise Bither said that she opposed the plan as it altered the feeder pattern for Glengary Elementary School students to go to Walnut Creek Middle …

The planned closure of two elementary schools in West Bloomfield may force transfer students at other schools to move, too, which upsets some parents.
The subdivisions of Westwind Lake Village and Park Ridge in West Bloomfield are home to several young families who comprise a rather unique community. Over the past several years, Randi Carrick and parents of 23 students in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District have transferred their children from nearby Twin Beach Elementary to Pleasant Lake Elementary. That sense of community, they fear, is threatened by the planned closures of Twin Beach and Maple Elementary in the spring. Three redistricting proposals are being considered by the Walled Lake Board of Education, two of which include a plan to "reset" transfer students back to their "home school," which has stirred up controversy. "We feel like we're losing our home," said Carrick…

Community turns out to hear plans dealing with closures of two local elementaries. The board is expected to decide Feb. 16 which of three plans it will implement.
Dozens of concerned parents, teachers, and administrators descended upon the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools Educational Services Center Thursday night to hear three proposals on how to redistrict in the area. Despite the circumstances — the closure of Maple Elementary and Twin Beach Elementary Schools as announced last summer — the tenor of discussion remained peaceful and at times reverential as representatives of an appointed, 54-person redistricting committee presented ideas on transportation, building capacity, keeping neighborhoods together, a balance of diversity, and other specified parameters. The committee had met in various capacities since October, but Thursday's meeting offered perhaps the clearest picture of where the …

Fiebke-Lang, 47, has over 22 years of experience in the Walled Lake School District teaching first, second, third and fifth grades.
Although Maple Elementary School is scheduled to close at the end of the school year, Michelle Fiebke-Lang sees this as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the school and recognize “who Maple is.” Fiebke-Lang participated in the Walled Lake Schools Aspiring Principals Leadership Academy and said that she learned, “shared decision-making and collaboration through task teams and, even though we are only going to be together for one year, I’m going to empower others.” “We have a lot to do but we will find our strengths and reorganize what a committee will look like to help empower others,” she added.
