West Bloomfield Schools Facilities Plan and More on the Agenda

School district moving into bidding process on planned school reconfiguration and administrative relocation.

The West Bloomfield School District, Township Board, and the Orchard Lake Village City Council are scheduled to meet on Monday. Here's a brief look at what is on the School Board agenda.  The School Board is expected to receive an update on the cost of closing Ealy Elementary School next fall, among other plans to consolidate facilities. According to a memo from Superintendent Gerald Hill, the district is not currently in a position to move forward with recommended plans to close the ACS building, moving its employees to West Bloomfield High School, as well as Ealy. In order to keep Ealy's closure on schedule, it's time to move into the bidding process soon, Hill said. However, the district's capital funds project would fall into a $1.9 …

Lets get this straight. The district spent how much on consulting fees to design and implement a school consolidation plan they could not afford in the first place ? Thats like planning to remodel your house when you don't have a job and no money in the bank. Also, was not WB the only school district who did not pass their sinking fund millage in the entire area. When are people going to wake up …   more ›

Missing Dog Found Alive at Pine Lake Marina and Returned

Orchard Lake Village resident Laura Solomon shares the story of Lulu, her dog which was found and returned thanks to helpful neighbors and social media.

If the Solomon family of Orchard Lake Village ever needed a helping hand, their neighbors and friends were there for them. Earlier this week, when the favorite family dog went missing for three days, they sure needed it. Not only did they get a big lift from the community, Laura Solomon said, but a deeper power may have played a part in helping return the dog home and in good health. Lulu became the object of search at the Orchard Lake Road/Pine Lake Road intersection on Sunday night after running away from home and possibly being hit by a car, Solomon said.  Lulu was found on Wednesday night, trying to brave the elements underneath a dock at the Pine Lake Marina, but in fairly good health. Why 12 Very Old Trees Were Removed from Orchard Lake Boat Launch Site

Mayor, State Representative and area riparians met with State Department of Natural Resources last week to discuss the controversial construction project.

It was communications difficulties, rather than destructive tendencies, which led to concern over construction at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) public launch site on Orchard Lake. Mayor Bruce McIntyre, State Rep. Chuck Moss (R-40th District), and area riparians met last week to better understand the $300,000 project, which temporarily closed down the site Sept. 4. The DNR announced Aug. 27 that the site will remain closed until mid-October in order to revamp the site to modern standards. That wasn't enough time to allow riparians the opportunity to remove their boats, the crowd said, nor was it appropriate given the number of days left in the season before the weather became too cold for boating. "We can understand …

Orchard Lake Boat Launch Construction: Too Much, Too Soon?

City officials to meet with state Department of Natural Resources this week to voice concerns of bad timing and excess woodland management.

As the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) public launch site on Orchard Lake undergoes construction, city officials are questioning the timing of closing it so soon after Labor Day. Mayor Bruce McIntyre said not only that, but there are also concerns of excess woodland management — the amount of trees being cut down — which necessitate a meeting between the groups this week. "We're very upset over this. (The DNR) has put people in a bind," McIntyre said. "It's too late to save the forest, but it's important that they know how we feel."   The Department of Natural Resources announced Aug. 27 that the site will close temporarily on Sept. 4 and remain closed until mid-October in order to reconstruct the site. The initial issue …

Reel in a Good Time at the Big Fish Festival This Weekend

Eighth-annual event kicking off Saturday has moved to Abbott Middle School this year.

Families seeking a boatload of fun before the beginning of the school year need not look further than the Big Fish Festival this weekend, according to organizers. The eighth-annual event, hosted by the Bloomfield North Area Chamber of Commerce, combines art, entertainment and sports to benefit local area businesses and other entities, said Mel Hager, vice president of the chamber. Over 2,000 are expected as the free event moves from Roosevelt Elementary School in Keego Harbor to Abbott Middle School in Orchard Lake Village this year, Hager continued, in the hopes of making car parking easier on a larger road and offering more space for business booths.  Indeed, Hager said, the event is known for its "big fish" (which translates to "Keego" …

Firefighters Save Deer from Icy Orchard Lake

On Tuesday morning, local firefighters saved a deer that had fallen through the ice around 50 yards off the shore in Orchard Lake.

On Tuesday morning, West Bloomfield resident Jagdish Vani came upon an odd sight on the partially frozen surface of Orchard Lake. Around 50 yards from shore was a deer, he told FOX 2 News, which was struggling to stay afloat after falling through a thin sheet of ice.  The West Bloomfield Fire Department received the call around 8 a.m., Fire Marshal Pat Riney said later in a news release, and fire crews from two different stations found the deer struggling as ice continued to break beneath it. The fire department responded with special ice rescue equipment, including cold water immersion suits and a rescue boat, Riney said. Firefighters were able to enter the water and slip ropes around the animal to pull the deer to shore where it …
