Vigil Scheduled in Honor of Slain West Bloomfield Man

Family still seeks answers after shooting last week at west side Detroit auto shop.

A candlelight vigil was scheduled in West Bloomfield Monday night in honor of Samir Mikha Hannawa, 49, who was laid to rest this past weekend after tragedy struck last week. According to news reports and a Facebook post by the local Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce, Hannawa, 49, a father of seven living in West Bloomfield, was shot by an unknown assailant(s) at Great Lakes Collision Shop at on Wyoming near Grand River in Detroit Nov. 7. According to witnesses who called 911, two suspects fled in a car before Hannawa was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit, but doctors were unable to save him. Funeral Thursday for Teen Bryson Salem

18-year-old Walled Lake Central graduate had no pre-existing medical conditions when he collapsed playing basketball Tuesday, according to Oakland County officials.

An autopsy is pending for a local teenager who collapsed playing basketball and died Tuesday night at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. Walled Lake Central High School graduate Bryson Salem, 18, was playing basketball at LifeTime Fitness in Commerce Township shortly after 5 p.m. when he collapsed, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:17 p.m., according to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office. Visitation took place Wednesday at the Southfield Funeral Home, with a funeral mass scheduled for 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church. Changes in Store for Some in West Bloomfield's Catholic Community

Beginning next month, Latin Catholics will begin using new missals at Sunday Mass.

Change is coming, and it is not only the weather, for some members of West Bloomfield's Catholic community. A new translation of the Roman Missal, will be used worldwide beginning in November. The Roman Missal is an assembly of prayers, chants and directions used to celebrate Mass. The missal, which was originally translated from Latin to English in the 1970s, has been updated. Catholic churches will begin using the new text next month. The most sensitive of the changes is the translation of pro multis as “for many.” The narrative of the Last Supper, which currently reads, “which will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven,” will be changed to “which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.” …

Red Cross: Blood Donations Needed For Hurricane Irene Shortage

More than 60 American Red Cross blood drives had to be canceled due to Hurricane Irene, creating a shortfall in the nation's blood supply.

In addition to destroying millions of dollars in homes and infrastructure along the East Coast, Hurricane Irene also dealt a terrible blow to the American Red Cross' blood supply. The storm and its aftermath has forced the cancellation of more than 60 Red Cross blood drives resulting in the shortfall of more than 2,100 units of blood. Additional blood drives in the areas affected by the storm are expected to be postponed in the coming days due to storm damage and power outages as well. Thus, the Red Cross is urging people in areas unaffected by the storm to donate blood and platelets as soon as possible. Nationwide, around 44,000 blood donations are needed every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients and children with …
