Local Prodigy Mixes Community Service Into New Fashion Line

West Bloomfield High School graduate and basketball star David Merritt launches online-only business; proceeds benefit scholarship fund for disadvantaged youth.

Merritt, whose parents Viveca and Andrew Merritt lead the mega-church Straight Gate Congregation Church of Detroit as Pastor and Bishop, respectively, is a West Bloomfield High School graduate who excelled in class (Class of 2004 graduate with honors) and on the basketball hardwood (named All-State in his senior season). Merritt moved on to the University of Michigan, where he co-captained a successful hoops team in his senior season and graduated in 2009. Mega-Church Moves to Local School on Easter

Bishop Andrew Merritt leads Detroit-based Straight Gate International Church into Orchard Lake Middle School for the first time on Sunday.

When he wrote his best-selling book My Faith is Taking Me Someplace, Bishop Andrew Merritt, pastor of Straight Gate International Church, was serious. On Easter Sunday, his belief that he has been called to plant a new church will be taking Bishop Merritt and his Detroit-based ministry to Oakland County. After 33 years and eight expansions in Detroit, Bishop Merritt will open a West Bloomfield affiliate of Straight Gate International Church this Sunday at Orchard Lake Middle School. Beginning this new ministry in a school rather than a grand church is a comfortable and familiar start for Merritt, a Bloomfield resident who has fond memories of when his children attended school there.
