Meet the Candidates for West Bloomfield Township Supervisor

West Bloomfield Patch begins a week-long series of profiles prior to the Aug. 7 election with incumbent Michele Economou Ureste and challenger Jonathan Warshay.

The Aug. 7 primary election is drawing closer every day, but how much do you really know about the names on the ballot? Patch is interviewing candidates running in the Aug. 7 primary, including positions on the West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees: Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer, and Trustee. On Monday, we'll cover two candidates for Supervisor: the incumbent, Michele Economou Ureste and challenger Jonathan Warshay. A second challenger, Robert Egren, has not responded to Patch. Dennis W. Thomson, the lone Republican running for Supervisor, filed to run as a write-in candidate earlier this month.  Stay tuned. On Tuesday, Patch will feature interviews with candidates for Clerk: the incumbent, Cathy Shaughnessy, and challenger, Neha Patel…

Should West Bloomfield Candidates Ever Sue Each Other?

Township Board of Trustees candidates talk divisiveness and law at voters forum Wednesday.

As the entire West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees is essentially seeking re-election, a series of lawsuits which divided the board has been a hot-button issue during the campaign. Candidates in the West Bloomfield Township Aug. 7 primary including those running for supervisor, clerk, treasurer, and trustee touched on that and a wide range of issues at the League of Women Voters-sponsored event Wednesday at the Main Library. Jonathan Warshay, who is running for supervisor, was among many candidates pledging not to sue the township board majority. Last month, the Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed the circuit court decision against the plantiffs — Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste and Trustee Steven Kaplan — of a suit brought against…

Larry Brown sued the West Bloomfield Police Department so he should go as well unless there is a double standard here. The mantra has been that no trustee should sue the township (which the WB Police Dept is a department). All of these sitting incumbents seem to be after power and forcing submission. Let's add the Clerk Shaughnessy to the list of incumbents that should be voted out of office. The…   more ›

Appeals Court Supports Decision Against Economou Ureste

West Bloomfield Township Supervisor a part of lawsuit against Board of Trustees majority.

Updated: 6:27 p.m. The Michigan Court of Appeals on Friday affirmed a circuit court decision on a lawsuit which had divided the West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees. Township Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste and Trustee Steven Kaplan had appealed the dismissal of a lawsuit they filed, which sought ruling on four issues, most of them involving the power of the township board majority against the power of the supervisor. In 2011, Circuit Court Judge Rudy Nichols dismissed the suit and said that any remaining issues "appear to be political in nature." Two of the issues, including including whether a police chief can only be appointed by the supervisor subject to approval of the township board and whether a trustee may refuse payment …

The consultant listed the strengths of the system at the last meeting which included a relatively stable infrastructure and many in house developed applications that are highly functional. The biggest weakness was budget constraints, fewer employees, and lack of professional development to keep the IT department employees trained. Residents should go the the township's website to view the board …   more ›

Which Democrat will emerge from the Aug. 7 primary with their party's backing in the new 14th U.S. House District that was created by Republicans in Lansing during redistricting? Reps. Gary Peters (9th) and Hansen Clarke (13th) are sitting Congressmen in the race which also includes former State Rep. Mary Waters, Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence and 39th Court Magistrate Bob Costello. John Hauler is the lone Republican. 2. Johnathan Warshay"s strategy to beat the township's current Supervisor is to waste thousands of dollars on negative campaign material. He mails out these 8X11 attack ads against his opponent and only includes a very small box about himself. How can it be a new day with Warshay if this is his positive version of introducing himself to the community? A positive candidate would promote his vision …   more ›
