Planning Commission to Consider Lubavitch Campus Expansion

Michigan Jewish Institute to come before West Bloomfield planners next week.

A plan to build a new addition of more than 16,000 square feet at the Lubavitch Campus is proposed as part of the agenda for the West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission meeting next week. There were 11 separate activities proposed on at the site, located on the north side of Maple Road near Halsted Road, which were granted special use approval by the Township in 1992. The college building site plan came before the township in 2007 and was approved by both the planning commission and township board. The site plan is nearly identical to the previously-approved building; however the site plan approval has expired. No changes to the plan are proposed.  Michael Baer of Neumann/Smith Architecture in Southfield wrote that students at the …

Were Questions Inappropriate for Developers Building Mosque at Eagle Elementary?

Wetland Review Board schedules site visit, Planning Commission hears concerns from community and faces charges of Islamophobia from activist organizer.

Because of issues surrounding the construction of a mosque and community center on the former Eagle Elementary School site at 14 Mile and Middlebelt in West Bloomfield, an Islamic activist organizer has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to monitor the situation. Council on American-Islamic Relations of Michigan (CAIR-MI) executive director Dawud Walid cited an inappropriateness in concerns raised by commissioner Jim Manna during a planning commission hearing Tuesday. Walid compared the situation to that in Pittsfield Township last year, in which CAIR-MI alleged discrimination by that township's government. Nabil Suliman, a member of the ICA, provided information and fielded questions about the project Tuesday. He explained that the …

What does them having a mosque have anything to do with you. If you don't like it, don't go. Religion is tearing everyone apart, you're supposed to be so loving and moral. It is completely absurd, and you are being extremely irrational and intolerant. I myself am an atheist, and I have no problem with anyone building any mosque, temple, or church etc, ironic huh?   more ›

West Bloomfield Church Seeks Expansion Approval

Metro Detroit Christian Church, which recently relocated from Farmington Hills, plans to renovate an existing place of worship at Middlebelt and Maple roads.

There is a common idiom which claims that someone only gets one chance at a first impression. Metro Detroit Christian Church is apparently hoping to make the most of theirs. On Tuesday night, the West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission will consider new construction and renovation to the building south of Maple Road and east of Middlebelt Road, which has recently become occupied after the congregation's move from Farmington Hills. The nondenominational church, guided by Pastors Peter and Lisa Dresser, seeks to add a 450 square-foot expansion to the sanctuary area for a platform, a barrier-free bathroom, and an enclosure to an existing courtyard. Planning Commission meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. and are broadcast by Civic Center TV. …

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital Expansion Approved

Once completed next year, adding a second floor will add three new operating rooms and push the hospital's size to more than 1 million square feet.

A vertical expansion project that will add three new operating rooms to Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital was approved unanimously Tuesday night by the Planning Commission at Town Hall. The 9,600-square foot, one-story project, which was expected to begin construction in February pending approval, is actually less than 1 percent of the total size of the hospital, which will be pushed to more than 1 million square feet after completion, which is estimated at June 2013. The size of current operating rooms are too small for modern services, which require more electronic equipment and people, Marco Capicchioni of Henry Ford Health System said. The three new larger operating rooms, which will connect to each other internally, will allow more …

On the Agenda: Joint Meeting to Review Trail Extension

The West Bloomfield Township Wetland Review Board and Planning Commission will come together Tuesday to review the trail extension project slated for construction in spring 2012.

The West Bloomfield Trail extension project, some three years and $1.5 million in the making, is moving toward final approval. The project to extend the West Bloomfield Trail from Arrowhead Road to Haggerty Road was discussed with mostly positive feedback from residents at a public meeting held by the commission Oct. 11, but must be approved by the Township Board, the Road Commission for Oakland County and the Michigan Department of Transportation before construction, which is slated to begin next year. West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Commission Director Dan Navarre said he expects final approval before the end of the year, pending approval from the Wetland Review Board and the Planning Commission at their joint meeting Tuesday night …

Planning Commission Amends Planterra's Alcoholic Beverage License

Conservatory will be allowed to continue and expand its role in hosting parties.

The West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission on Tuesday approved 4-2 a license for Planterra Conservatory to sell alcoholic beverages. The approved license comes as an amendment to a site plan originally approved in January that allowed Planterra to host dance and entertainment parties including the sale of beer, wine and spirits. Planterra is located in a single-family residential district, which necessitated the commission’s approval before it could begin selling alcohol. The approved amended license now allows Planterra to profit from the sale of those beverages. Since the original approval, Planterra has hosted about 17 such events, Planterra President Shane Pliska said Tuesday. All of them, Pliska said, are invitation only, as …
