Former Vice President moves into new role as school board elects new officers.
The West Bloomfield School District Board of Education voted to elect new officers at its meeting Monday night: Each officer is moving into a new position, following the Nov. 2012 general election and the retirement of longtime board member Bruce Tobin, who served as President at that time. Sakwa moves into the new role having served for one year as Vice President, while Singh had previously served as Secretary. Both of those board members were elected to their first terms in 2009. According to the district's website, Sakwa is a 15-year resident of the school district.

Voters will decide on 1.25-mill, 14-year building and site sinking fund proposal in special election.
The 2013 election picture got a little clearer at the West Bloomfield School Board meeting Monday with the approval of a building site and sinking fund millage proposal. The district will ask voters to pass a 14-year, 1.25-mill ($1.25 per $1,000 of taxable valuation, or $125/year for taxpayers in a home with a taxable value of $100,000) proposal in a special election May 7. The first levy will, if approved, take place on July 1, 2013. The millage is expected to raise $30.25 million if approved for the district to use primarily on upgrades or repairs. The district's school enrollment and facilities committee identified $23.1 million in needed repairs, including $4.1 million of work at the high school, $9 million at the district's two …

It could happen, according to Kalamazoo-based archaeologist David Brose, who seeks permission from West Bloomfield Schools to excavate.
A formal dig of Apple Island on Orchard Lake in 2008 uncovered a lot for West Bloomfield School District students to learn. A new project, proposed by the Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society, could uncover all that and "beyond considerable prestige" if successful. The island, which has been owned by the district since 1970, was suggested as a possible nominee to the Michigan state and National Register of Historic Places by Kalamazoo-based archaeologist David Brose during a presentation at Monday night's school board meeting. He said that working with the Western Michigan University Department of Anthropology, he hopes to offer an advanced archaeology course in May 2013 on the island with permission and help from the district in the…

Tuesday's 'no' vote puts district in a 'less proactive position' to make improvements to buildings, said Superintendent Gerald Hill.
Edited: 1:55 p.m., Dec. 17 to remove information regarding building and site sinking fund The West Bloomfield School District administration could be faced with difficult decisions regarding the value of making improvements to buildings versus continuing general fund expenditures at an acceptable rate in coming years, according to Superintendent Gerald Hill. Hill said that the failure of the West Bloomfield Schools' building and site sinking fund millage proposal at the polls Tuesday could be a result of voters having never seen the measure discussed in the media or at community events. The 1.5-mill levy proposal ($1.50 per $1,000 of taxable valuation) would have reportedly generated an estimated $2.4 million annually for the district to …

Here's a quick-hit, recap of Monday night's Board of Education meeting.
Thanks in part to a donation from the West Bloomfield Educational Foundation, a FIRST Robotics team could begin at West Bloomfield High School as soon as next month. The competition is modeled after traditional high school varsity athletics, according to Community Education Director Joey Spano, involving training in science and technology to help students prepare for a career in science, engineering or technology. The $5,000 donation, approved at Monday night's Board of Education meeting at WBHS, could allow for the team to form by November and compete by January 2013, according to Spano. "It is an outstanding program ... and we're very enthusiastic," WBEF President Elizabeth Zubrzycki told the board. "Many schools in our area have this …

I too am disappointed with the new officers of the school board. President Sakwa is more interested in her influence in our community. I was not aware that she has no university degree. Is this true? No college degree and no business experience. What does she bring to the board? This is like desperate housewives or board members. Other members just are monopolizing the time they get to talk. Well…   more ›
