Weigh In On the Future of Orchard Lake Road During Special Meeting Wednesday

The West Bloomfield Town Center Task Force is looking at ways to stimulate development along Orchard Lake Road between 14 Mile and Maple.

How should Orchard Lake Road look like five years? How about 10 years? Those are the questions West Bloomfield Township is looking to answer at a meeting Wednesday morning, held by West Bloomfield's Town Center Task Force. Created in mid-December by the West Bloomfield Township Board, the task force is charged with evaluating the area along Orchard Lake Road between 14 Mile and Pinehurst Court, near Maple Road.  At the heart of the issue is the township ordinance that governs development in that area, frequently called the center district. The area is largely populated by retail and office buildings. According to Senior Planner Sara Roediger, township code has specific requirements for buildings in that area, including requirements for …

Township Officials to Pursue Monument for Military, Police, Fire

Local branch of group representing the Tuskegee Airmen will help with 'Tomb of the Unknown Soldier' monument.

West Bloomfield Township officials are working to erect a monument in memory of those who defend, protect, and serve citizens every day. The local chapter of the nonprofit organization Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. presented plans to erect the monument during Monday night's board of trustees meeting. The "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" is a jet black, granite monument which will likely be situated somewhere at or around West Bloomfield Police Department headquarters, said Township Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste. According to the group, the monument will mention military service personnel, police, and firefighters who are either living or deceased. The Supervisor added that she will pursue fundraising to cover the cost of the monument, estimated …

Quick Hits: Dunham's Building Vacancy Discussed

Here's a look at how the West Bloomfield Township Board voted Monday night.

Among the highlights of the West Bloomfield Township Board meeting Monday night were as follows. Stay tuned to Patch for a more in-depth look at the issues discussed later this week: Redevelopment at the former Dunham's Sports building at the corner of Northwestern Highway and Orchard Lake Road will have to wait a little longer, after a board vote. A motion to ask township officials to draft a zoning amendment which would be necessary to allow for an indoor storage facility to move in was voted down, 4-3. At its Dec. 20 meeting, the board moved to consider a review of the ordinance with regard to the township's center district area, in which the property is located. However, Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste said at the time that the …

Planning Commission to Consider Lubavitch Campus Expansion

Michigan Jewish Institute to come before West Bloomfield planners next week.

A plan to build a new addition of more than 16,000 square feet at the Lubavitch Campus is proposed as part of the agenda for the West Bloomfield Township Planning Commission meeting next week. There were 11 separate activities proposed on at the site, located on the north side of Maple Road near Halsted Road, which were granted special use approval by the Township in 1992. The college building site plan came before the township in 2007 and was approved by both the planning commission and township board. The site plan is nearly identical to the previously-approved building; however the site plan approval has expired. No changes to the plan are proposed.  Michael Baer of Neumann/Smith Architecture in Southfield wrote that students at the …

Is the Redevelopment Possibility at this Vacancy a Bad 'Fit,' West Bloomfield?

Fitness club will not be granted necessary permission to move on Orchard Lake Road.

The West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees voted Monday night to take no action on a request to allow developers the chance to fill a vacancy at the former Audette Cadillac property. The request for an amendment to the township's zoning ordinance would have been necessary to allow the national fitness club chain LA Fitness to move in to the property, which has been vacant since 2009. The township's zoning ordinance stands against buildings in the center district facing "A" streets to feature a fitness club the first floor. Senior Planner Sara Roediger explained "A" streets as a secondary streets network located in the center district which was created in hopes of creating a walkable downtown area. Roediger added that the specific …
