The township is among more than half a dozen Oakland County communities cited in a Sunday Oakland Press article.
West Bloomfield Township isn't the only Oakland County community working to draw businesses "downtown". The Oakland Press reports that the township's effort to re-do zoning in the area of Orchard Lake Road between 14 Mile and Pinehurst Court, near Maple, is one of more than a half dozen downtown revitalization projects underway in communities including Ferndale, Pontiac, Rochester, Waterford, Lake Orion and Auburn Hills. The article cited two projects – a storage facility and fitness center – that West Bloomfield officials denied last fall, because they didn't fit with the town center zoning. “We want to see a viable corridor,” Sara Roediger, West Bloomfield senior planner, told the newspaper. On Monday, township officials agreed to …

The West Bloomfield Township Board votes Monday to approve Town Center Task Force recommendations.
West Bloomfield Township officials voted on Monday to look at hiring a consultant who would help make changes to the township's Downtown Overlay District. The district includes the commercial area along Orchard Lake Road, between 14 Mile and Pinehurst Court, near Maple. The hiring recommendation came from the Town Center Task Force, which spent the last four months gathering information about possible changes to the district. Officials say the zoning rules have created problems for businesses wanting to locate or redevelop property in that area. "We have lost opportunities for businesses coming into this township because of this overlay district," trustee Larry Brown said. Other task force recommendations include exercising flexibility …

Township Board seeks to extend six-month ban on oil and natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
The West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet on Monday. Here's a brief look at what is on the Township Board meeting agenda. As regulators continue to study a strategy of balancing the necessity of natural resources in West Bloomfield with the rights of oil and gas drillers, an extension on a ban of such activities is on the agenda. In Aug. 2012, the Township Board enacted a moratorium on drilling and hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," for six months. The extension request is also for a period of six months. The issue initially came before the board in May 2012. At a state auction of drilling rights, Jordan Development of Traverse City purchased much of the available 18,347 acres in Oakland County, including land …

Community offers thanks and praise in wake of the tragedy of Patrick O'Rourke's death.
For demonstrating bravery in the barricaded gunman incident last September which resulted in the death of an officer, the West Bloomfield community and many more gave their thanks Monday night. In front of crowd of family of friends, Chief Mike Patton explained that while those honored with department awards — six officers, three dispatch officials, five firefighters, and one civilian — likely wished that they were at Town Hall for any other purpose, that the fallen officer would have wanted to see it. Officer Patrick O'Rourke, later promoted to Sergeant, was fatally shot Sept. 9 while responding with other officers to what police believed could have been a suicidal man. The incident sparked a barricaded gunman standoff that ended when …

School district moving into bidding process on planned school reconfiguration and administrative relocation.
The West Bloomfield School District, Township Board, and the Orchard Lake Village City Council are scheduled to meet on Monday. Here's a brief look at what is on the School Board agenda. The School Board is expected to receive an update on the cost of closing Ealy Elementary School next fall, among other plans to consolidate facilities. According to a memo from Superintendent Gerald Hill, the district is not currently in a position to move forward with recommended plans to close the ACS building, moving its employees to West Bloomfield High School, as well as Ealy. In order to keep Ealy's closure on schedule, it's time to move into the bidding process soon, Hill said. However, the district's capital funds project would fall into a $1.9 …

Here's a look at how the West Bloomfield Township Board voted Monday night.
Among the highlights of the West Bloomfield Township Board meeting Monday night were as follows. Stay tuned to Patch for a more in-depth look at the issues discussed later this week: Redevelopment at the former Dunham's Sports building at the corner of Northwestern Highway and Orchard Lake Road will have to wait a little longer, after a board vote. A motion to ask township officials to draft a zoning amendment which would be necessary to allow for an indoor storage facility to move in was voted down, 4-3. At its Dec. 20 meeting, the board moved to consider a review of the ordinance with regard to the township's center district area, in which the property is located. However, Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste said at the time that the …

Fitness club will not be granted necessary permission to move on Orchard Lake Road.
The West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees voted Monday night to take no action on a request to allow developers the chance to fill a vacancy at the former Audette Cadillac property. The request for an amendment to the township's zoning ordinance would have been necessary to allow the national fitness club chain LA Fitness to move in to the property, which has been vacant since 2009. The township's zoning ordinance stands against buildings in the center district facing "A" streets to feature a fitness club the first floor. Senior Planner Sara Roediger explained "A" streets as a secondary streets network located in the center district which was created in hopes of creating a walkable downtown area. Roediger added that the specific …

Change could come soon for zoning ordinance.
The West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees voted Monday night to study the long-term viability of its plans to redevelop the area of Orchard Lake Road in between 14 Mile and Pinehurst Court, near Maple Road. Guided in large part by difficulties finding tenants to move into and, in some cases, redevelop business property in the area called the center district, the committee will study data on successful center districts in other suburban communities and other models of development. It was decided by a 6-1 vote that the task force comprised of Board members, Planning Commissioners and a local resident will evaluate the township zoning ordinance and will present its recommendations in four months. Trustee Larry Brown, a former Planning …
