The West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees will consider Monday night whether or not the procedure for providing legal representation at 48th District Court should be changed. Township Board Allocates Grant for Public Services and More

$104,877 of federal CDBG funds going towards support for local seniors, victims of domestic violence, minor home repairs and accesible architecture.

The West Bloomfield Board of Trustees approved the allocation of more than $104,000 in federal Community development block grant (CDBG) funds at Monday's meeting. The funds will support senior services in the township, along with HAVEN, a group that works with victims of domestic violence, and the township's minor home repair program. Community development block grants are part of a federal program run by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program, according to HUD, provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Township Senior Planner Sara Roediger said the allocations for the 2013 funds were similar to the allocations made in previous years. At the meeting, …

Township, Library to Share Cost of New Electric Vehicle Charging Station

The charging station at the Civic Center campus will be the first in the township, according to officials.

The West Bloomfield Board of Trustees and the West Bloomfield Library have agreed to share the cost of a new electric vehicle charge station. The station will be the first of its kind in the township, and will be located on the Civic Center campus near township hall and the library. "We are always looking at ways to become as green as possible," Trustee Howard Rosenberg said. "I think it's critical that the township takes this step, and hopefully it will inspire other places in the township to do the same." Treasurer Teri Weingarden agreed, "We were the first to have a windmill and I think we need to continue the trend of being a green community. I think it will attract businesses and if we can show this is a success others will want to …

Patrick O'Rourke Retroactively Promoted to Sergeant

Township Board honors 12-year West Bloomfield Police Officer with promotion, benefitting O'Rourke's family.

If West Bloomfield Police Department Officer Patrick O'Rourke were able to continue his heroic work, he would have likely been promoted at some point, according to Chief Michael Patton. The Township Board unanimously voted Monday night to approve a recommendation retroactively promoting O'Rourke to sergeant at its first meeting since his tragic death Sept. 9. "I remember once talking with an old command officer that when we look at who we hire sometimes, we should look at these people who will be our next sergeants, lieutenants," Patton said. "Eventually someone in the department has to rise up to that level and Pat would have been one of those individuals. "Pat had an innate leadership quality." The board meeting was the first since the …

'Monopine' Cell Tower Supported in Appeals Court

Township Board vote against T-Mobile found to be untenable.

A Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals decision issued Tuesday could allow T-Mobile to "plant" a tree-esque structure to benefit cellular communication in a West Bloomfield Township neighborhood. T-Mobile had originally filed an injunction against the township after a 2009 decision by the Board of Trustees to deny it the right to build a 90-foot cell tower designed to resemble a tree in place of a 50-foot pole at Detroit Edison's Walnut Substation. T-Mobile said at the time that construction of the "monopine" would address a gap in coverage in areas near the substation, on the west side of Middlebelt, just south of Long Lake Road. The board had cited concerns with the aesthetics of the structure in voting against a special land use permit, …

West Bloomfield Officials Ban Drilling for a Six-month Period

Local officials say they are bound by state law limiting oil and natural gas drilling.

Over the next six months, the West Bloomfield Township officials will work to drill out an ordinance restricting oil and natural gas drilling. The township board of trustees voted unanimously at Monday night's meeting to enact a six-month moratorium on drilling operations, which should allow for enough time to fully understand the consequences of state laws which restrict local governments on the issue. The moratorium will run from Sept. 1 through Feb. 28. However, a developer may request a public hearing from the township in order to explain hardship or a violation of state and federal laws. The issue initially came before the board in May. At a state auction of drilling rights, Jordan Development of Traverse City purchased much of the …

Show Me the Money: Board Candidates Report Campaign Contributions

Eleven candidates for the West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees report having received more than $118,000 in contributions since their campaigns began.

UPDATE: Aug. 2, 9:50 p.m. The story was updated to reflect Trustee Steven Kaplan's contributions. Kaplan had failed to meet the Oakland County Clerk's deadline of July 27 to file pre-primary statements. Someone is paying for the mailings and lawn signs of candidates running for West Bloomfield Township's local offices, but who? Under Michigan campaign finance law that information is public record and must be filed with the Oakland County clerk's office. A candidate's committee to elect must file annual campaign statements as well as pre- and post-election campaign statements for elections where the candidate's name appears on the ballot, including the Aug. 7 primary. Incumbent Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste reported the most …
