Student Chefs Clash at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital

Kids' cooking clubs vie for top honors in what will become a biennial competition.

In the first of what will become bi-annual events, teams of young chefs from four area middle schools competed in the Clash of the Cooking Crews healthy-cooking competition, June 1 at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital.

Chef Johnny Prep of Bloomfield Hills worked with parents and administrators to create after school cooking clubs at Bloomfield Hills Middle School, Swartz Creek Middle School, Waterford Pierce Middle School and Howell Parker Middle School. Students ages 10-15, have become “cooking crew” members, learning how to prepare healthy dishes.

The students put their new skills to the ultimate test at the Clash of the Cooking Crews event, competing head-to-head in three categories: breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks. Each category included a mystery recipe that the young chefs created, centering on a popular food item and nutrition.

“It is exciting for these young chefs to take what they’ve learned in the cooking classes, apply it in the kitchen and compete against their peers,” said Chef Prep. “They will be judged on their creativity as they take flavorful, nutritious foods and create a delicious and attractive dishes. Later in the day the teams will show short videos they developed in their schools to promote health eating to their peers."

Chef Prep is expanding the cooking club program across the state of Michigan and beyond. Schools interested in starting a cooking club can learn more at
