West Bloomfield Residents Pay Tribute to King Speech

The group reading of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s writings is part of an initiative to live his values 365 days of the year.

About a dozen West Bloomfield residents, including students and adults, gathered at West Bloomfield Township Public Library Wednesday afternoon, for a collective reading of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s writings and speeches.

The session began with King's letter from a Birmingham jail, and ended with his "I Have a Dream" speech. (See excerpts from the hour-long event in the video above.)

Co-organizer Deb Macon said the event was tied to West Bloomfield's MLK365 initiative, a year-round initiative supporting six values:

  • Caring
  • Fairness
  • Citizenship
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Trust
The reading was one of several events held at the library Aug. 27 and 28 to mark the 50th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered during the March on Washington Aug. 28, 1963.
