5 Things You Need to Know About This Week

A Labor Day picnic, the first day of school and the opening of a Holocaust memorial photography exhibit highlight the best of the township this week.

1. will host its annual 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Monday. This family event includes magicians, train rides, arts and crafts, bounce houses, DJs, games, soccer, pony rides and food. For more information, call the temple at 248-661-5700 or visit its website.

2. The school year will kick off this week for students in the West Bloomfield School District, Farmington Public Schools, and the Walled Lake Consolidated School District, among others. West Bloomfield schools begin Wednesday with new start times, including 7:10 a.m. for West Bloomfield High School. Walled Lake and Farmington schools begin Tuesday.

3. A new photography exhibit, debuts at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery in the Saturday. It is the first showing of what will become a traveling exhibit featuring the portraiture of photographer Monni Must. The Sylvan Lake resident photographed and interviewed Holocaust survivors throughout Europe after the devastating and unexpected death of her eldest daughter, Miya. 4. The weather forecast calls for showers on Labor Day giving way to sun later in the week. The National Weather Service is expecting isolated showers and mostly sunny skies with a high of 66 on Monday, followed by mostly sunny skies for the rest of the week. The high is expected to increase every day, capping off Saturday at 79 degrees, while a low of 50 is expected Tuesday night.
