Get Out: A Tribute to Old Detroit, Protect Your Child, Flowers Amongst Flowers

From a musical tribute to old Detroit to a dazzling exhibit of art among flowers, there's something for everyone this weekend in West Bloomfield.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. West Bloomfield Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and events to attend in the area.

Where:

When: Friday at 8 p.m.

Why go: The Jewish Ensemble Theater is putting on a public performance of one of the most widely read books and one of the most discussed Holocaust victims. Anne Frank's diary tells the story of a young girl who was in hiding for two years during the Nazi occupation. Each year the Jewish Ensemble Theater puts on a production of this enduring document which everyone should be aware of.

When: Saturday at 1 p.m.

Why go: Every parent agrees that safety for their children is one of their highest priorities. Today's class will help make sure your child knows that his/her life is important and that no one should ever hurt them. Children will learn how to recognize threats and respond effectively. The workshop is interactive and designed with children 7-11 years old in mind. The class will teach real world techniques that help prevent violence and reduce their risk of abduction.

When: Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Why go: Detroit award winning music journalist, Gary Graff, offers commentary dedicated to Jewish artists this evening.  He will be joined by musicians Billy Brandt (Grievous Angel, the Mission Band), "Tino" Gross (Howling Diablos) and Mark Pasman (WCSX’s “Motor City Blues Project”).  The evening promises interesting and educational commentary plus a night of music devoted to Jewish artists.

Where:

When: Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Why go: Planterra Conservatory is offering their first-ever Botanical Glass Exhibition featuring the works of Detroit-based Furnace Design Studio set in their garden setting.  The artwork will show you how color and horticultural have healing benefits. The exhibition of glass art mixed in with unusual live botanicals makes for a breath taking dazzling exhibit.

Where:

When: Sunday 7 p.m.

Why go: It's the last night of the Stephen Gottlieb Music Festival and the J.C.C. has brought back one of their most popular shows.  The Michigan Board of Cantors features 12 cantors from area congregations. These cantors will take you on a musical journey through old Detroit with Motown music, jazz at Bakers, a show at the Fisher, and a trip down memory lane.
