Week in Review: Investigation Continues in Missing Cyclist Case

Here's a recap of the biggest stories in West Bloomfield during the week of July 28-Aug. 3.

A lot happened this past week, and we want to make sure you didn't miss a thing. Here are some of the biggest stories:

 announced Thursday afternoon that they are no longer treating the  as a missing person investigation, but instead as a homicide investigation. 

"It is believed that it is highly unlikely for someone to survive based on the evidence that was involved," Troy Police spokesman Capt. Robert Redmond said Thursday afternoon at a press conference in Troy. “Investigators are treating this as a homicide."

He added, “Our efforts have shifted from locating Mr. Mikes to locating his body.”

Redmond said police are "working on a timeframe from Friday morning until Sunday morning" in order to give investigators "a better idea” of where to search for Mikes' body.

Mikes was last seen alive by his 16-year-old son, Andrew Mikes, on Thursday evening, according to Redmond. Mikes did not show up for work Friday, and investigators now believe his 21-year-old son, Patrick Joseph Mikes Jr., who , did not see his father leaving for a bike ride on Friday, as he first reported to police Sunday morning.

The city of Clawson is seeking feedback from the community in an online survey that will help officials determine how they can make downtown safer and more accessible for pedestrians.

The project specifically focuses on pedestrian access on Main Street and 14 Mile. Clawson will explore options such as bike lanes in the road, bike paths, crosswalks and a pedestrian island in the middle of the road.

The survey results will be the topic of discussion at a workshop on Aug. 13 where guest speaker Norm Cox, of the Ann Arbor-based firm Greenway Collaborative, will discuss best practices.

Royal Oak officers responded to call Monday from Oak Park Police that a man, who lived on East Farnum in Royal Oak, was wanted for attempted murder in Oak Park. Oak Park Police believed the man was heading to his home in Royal Oak.

Royal Oak officers surrounded the man’s home and he eventually surrendered to the officers, reports state. The man was taken into custody without any further incident and turned over to Oak Park officers at the scene.

According to police reports, officers were advised that the man had fired a single shot at his girlfriend’s son in Oak Park, later fleeing the scene with a .38 caliber handgun.
