Weekend Planner: United We Walk, Celtic Concert, and 'Lost in Yonkers'

Why go: Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday by participated in a united walk.  The day will begin with the WBHS Drum Line commencing the 30 minute walk outside, so dress warm.  The ,  choirs and the Madrigal Chorale of Southfield will perform. Freedom Rider, Dr. Silas Norman will be the keynote speaker. The day will wrap up with a candlelight vigil and a community family dinner.

When: Saturday at 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Why Go: The Friends of the Bloomfield Township Library are hosting their monthly book sale. With the cold weather about to bear down on us, this is a great opportunity to stock up on books to read at very affordable prices. You'll want to get there early for the best selection, but note the first hour is reserved for Friends members only.

Why Go: Cairn to Cairn is an acoustic trio based in Ann Arbor, Michigan comprised of flutist/vocalist Kelly McDermott, guitarist/singer Terry Farmer, and bassist/percussionist/vocalist Rob Crozier. The band uses folk songwriting with a mix of classical and rock'n'roll techiques to create heart and soul music. With strong vocals and talented musicians this trio will transport you to another time and place.

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: For eight years, Hagopian has been presenting their Nite Notes Concert Series set in the intimate and elegant setting of their showroom. On Friday, enjoy The Next Generation concert which will feature talented young artists from the Mosaic Youth Theater and young ensemble-in-residence, Amusia. The Mosaic Youth Theater concentrates on helping young artists excel on stage and in life through its acclaimed youth developement program. Amusia is a sextet that was named the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings inaugural young ensemble-in-residence in fall of 2011. The sextet hails from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Why Go: The Village Players bring Neil Simon's coming of age tale to life on stage this weekend. The play focuses on brothers Arty and Jay and their dysfunctional family as it takes you on a journey back to the early 1940's. The play will touch your heart with both laughter and tears. Written in 1991, it is the only Neil Simon play to win both the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award.
